Ajax P-16L Pillar Drill

Figured it was time I thought about getting this up and running:

Given to me by a mate who acquired it, "took it apart" to convert to 1P, got out of his depth so asked if I wanted it. Erm...yes please! I got it as a box of bits. Got as far as mounting the main lumps back up then got sidetracked...

It'll be a step up from this, bought years ago, the NVR switch died so I had to cobble one together with a 230V contactor in that box on the left. That being said, for a cheap drill it's done some work. At one time I was even carrying it to site!

Any chance of a favour please.
Can you take some close ups of the quill return spring and mechanism. Best not take the cover off unless you are feeling brave though - although I would love to see inside.
Looks similar to my Denford drill which is missing said part.

I'll whip the cover off and photograph it for you. I don't get much excitement tba.

Although it's started to rain @fizzy I've just done another Covid lft.

In half an hour, if still negative, it might be pub o'clock given the whole "life's too short/I've got a day off tomorrow" thing.

I'm thinking two or three different ales to really test my taste buds.

The quill spring mechanism will thus have to wait until I..... return...

as above. Was my dads. Probably since around when I was born and was bought from where he was working at the time. It’s now mine. It has been used but not abused.

edit. Motor is 1977 so about that old I’d say.

If I saw it for sale I would buy it

No single. Far as I can tell it’s factory as everything is the same colour

I have a b16L too

great drill for a hobbyist IMO.

ive just bought an inverter for mine, but not yet wired it up. Used to run mine from a home built rotary 3 phase converter, but tbh the digital versions are much nicer with their fancy frequency adjustment etc

One of the cheapo xsy-at1 inverters from ebay. 2.2kw, which is probably bigger than the tiny little 1/2hp motor needs, but I have an identical inverter for the 3/4kw lathe motor, and it worked straight out of the box. Also hoping to use it for the 2hp mill at some point maybe.

the variable speed is really neat
