seriously, who can cut 1mm off the edge of a sheet of alloy with tin snips?
4043 as richard said.
That'll almost certainly be due to them being Irwin, min cutting width with decent aviation snips should be at least = to sheet thickness and can be around half the sheet thickness.fair play mate, i dont have donkey old tin snips, only irwin aviation snips and they would just fold that instead of cutting it.
I personally wouldn't do that. Even for practice it's not a good idea. Filler materials have other elements (mag and Si) that are added to the weld pool to aid with the joint in many ways. Strength , ductility, weld ability, etc. Cutting a Chunk off an unknown Alu to weld that Unknown Alu is more likely to be worse than using one that's probably a safe bet like the 4043. You can use or get pure aluminium filler rod but it's not a joining filler, more a cladding rod against corrosion etc. Extremely shiny surface finish like a mirror but in a joint designed to take any load would be pretty much useless.
