I remember vaguely something being available years ago ,,, I tried a couple when I was working in refrigeration for compressor housing repairs ,, but either they were crazy expensive or I got porosity but either way we wound up using a welder out towards Larne , a nice guy who collected military vehicles Anderson springs to mind , but he was charging 100 pounds an inch for tig back then , I think I was on about 120 a week ,,, so just give them a go , very low amps I seem to remember .

Crazy money now never mind then, while on the subject of old things I called into mallusk engineering yesterday on the scrounge for some stock bar and a chat they are closing shop In September, i would say there isn't one of them under 60 and there's no one coming through to replace them, they are busy and always have been, be sad to see it close

Tested them out as someone had them but couldn't get to work, horrible to use, very thick slag, had to shove the rod down at quite a speed. Result was sort of ok, would do as a stop gap emergency repair but wouldn't put much faith in them for a permanent one. Very smoky like mentioned above so try and avoid the fumes.

If I was a machinist yes, I was just talking to a guy that runs another shop with mainly manual machines who is also flat out but can't get the men, most if their work is shut downs/break downs

Many years ago, when I was an apprentice at ICI, round the back of the training centre was a section of Nylon works where they had the aluminium tote tanks for bulk transfer of Nylon chips….occasionally the feet would get broken off and had to be welded back on….seeing the welders at work it was a work of art….In fact I got one of them to weld up the crank case and barrel off my Honda bike when the engine blew up….

I went to a machine shop on Monday and the same thing, youngest staff member is 49
The chap is closing in 6 years when he hits 60
out by the airport by chance ,,, i was out that way a few weeks ago getting a mini block machined

I tried some AlSi5 and AlSi12 rods a while ago. Got some good results with the AlSi12 but that might also be down to the brand.
The AlSi5 rods were of unknown origin.
Still have plenty of the AlSi12 left and sealed them in vacuum bags after I opened the can.
You have to store them sealed because the flux coating is salt based and very hygroscopic.

Anyone used them. I'm thinking a preheat is required (material not rod) as the flux does not want to melt until after about an inch of weld (if I can get that far) :whistle:

I went on a welding course at Stubbs Warrington many years ago. Came home with more than a newly acquired welding skill...
Anyway, as well as this, I blagged a box of their ali stick welding rods. They work ok - yes you need preheat, DC welder, short arc, feed fast. They then produce a strong, rough looking weld, with lots of slag over it, which you must remove because it turns to acid. And yes they absorb moisture from the air at a frightening rate, need a sealed container sealed again. I've welded castings with them succsesfully - they might have a place for outside work. Would I buy any now? No...

Me neither.
I paid less than €40 for that 2kg can Ceweld AlSi12 but that was before the corona hit. Now a can is close to €150.
