alvis/rover 5 speed

got involved helping to make the above conversion it entailed cutting the bell housing milling it flat and welding a thick alloy plate pre shaped and doweled in position once it was all set up on the engine
i used 1.2 5%mag wire and was around 29v with a wee crackle /spray.

access was tight in some areas so i had to look through 30 years of mig tips and nozzles to find the taper stuff good clean up an a roasting up to 200 and yee haw
turned out good bits of ferocity here and there but
ruff enough! lttle bit warp but plate is getting milled
we used 1/2

ahh like a cross between a Singer Gazelle and a DB5!

Fitted Toyota Hiace 5 speed to an Alvis 12/50 duck tail. A hell of a lot easier as it had a seperate gearbox. Clutch on the back of the motor, jack shaft to gearbox then drive shaft to diff. Made the car a lot nicer to drive and an easy job to refit the original if needed. Car was sold to Australia and several years later to the UK where I believe it still is

it tell my friend about this one he has the 20s 4 cyl one like this with short cardan shaft to g box
did you make the drive to the hi ace input shaft , did you use a hi ace clutch plate centre welded to the hardy spicer yoke

It was a wee while and a few cars ago.

I think we kept the Alvis clutch to keep it easy to return to original and had the shaft made to go betwen the engine and gearbox. We also fitted a pulley onto the drive shaft so we could run a hand grenade Japanese alternator but it would only charge when in gear.
The gear shift was in the same place as the original car, by your right knee. The Hiace was a column shift so was easy-iush to convert to floor shift.
The only mod I had to make to the chassis was to heat and hit with hammer to clearance one of the cross members. Fitted a modern aftermarket speedo.

My old boss back in the late 60’s had a TD21, no idea what happened to it. I understood it was a company car from his previous employment & had it as a retirement present.

The TF21 was the aesthetically challenged one with the stacked headlights.

That one is even Carlisle registered - Dad's first car was GHH 225, so Carlisle registrations hold a special place in my memory.
As a 1967 registered one it must have been one of the very last ones.

The TD21

a less than entirely successful remake of the Graber bodied TC21 (although I was never a fan of the stacked headlights)

I thought the rear wing always looked as if a narrower rear axle had been retrofitted.

I have contemplated a modern gearbox in my TA21, but the usual Ford conversion is well north of £5k. If I were to do it at all I think I would investigate a 5 speed automatic. They are the last of the 'simple' mechanically controlled boxes without dozens of inputs from every other sensor on the vehicle.

Was there a specific reason for the choice of gearbox? Other than 'I had a good one under the bench'?
