Another BBQ

So after quite a few weeks away from home with work I've been in the workshop this weekend building my self yet another BBQ. Must be the 10th one I've made.

Inspiration has been taken from Danman to give me the basic concept and a little of the best features from all my previous efforts to come up with what I think will be a realy nice functional bit of kit. I love cooking outside so it will get allot of use. In the last 7 days I've BBQ'd everyday.

So to the build, all materials are scrap, including the bottle. Local hardware store gave me 5 quid to take it away and legs, frame are some old shelving that was thrown out at work. Only costs have been the wheels which I sourced from fleabay.

Completion will be sometime next week with the grill possibly taking longer as the 6mm bar I've been promised hasn't arrived yet.

Improvised marking gauge to scribe the horizontal line around the cylinder. Best bit of Heath Robinson engineering I've done for a while

I've not used charcoal in years. I've got a tree surgeon mate who keeps me supplied with wood to burn. I have last years stuff ready for this season and waiting on a few more loads to complete my stock of wood for next year.

As for sausages, I only ever go to the Indian butchers to get my assortment do dead animal. Also do lots of veggie suff and even use the BBQ as a stove to use my array of heavy duty woks and pans. Not realy as expensive as you might think. Infact thinking about this week all our dinners have been cooked on wood so no gas has been consumed with the exception of the boiler

ive started using my homemade wood stove in the shed to do basic cooking...something for nothing appeal..and i swear it tastes better!

I saw one of my halfwit neighbours install a gas bottle woodburner in his caravan without taking the paint off. Thinking it looked cool.
I did not want to sound like a smart **** so I left him to it.
That taught him to think a bit more.

What a plonker!

It took all day to remove the paint, I first softened it with a propane torch. Then used a flap disc in a 7" grinder to take off paint. Wire brush in the 4" to get to all the diddly bits and then finally 120 in a DA to take out the marks left by the flap sander.

Phew, it's all painted now, heat resistant black on the main body and black smooth rite on the the frame

Looks good. A decent fire inside then the paint and galv wires brushes off in minutes

I'm making a similar one at the moment. Should be working on the mini but keep messing soth BBQ instead

Just need to make the side tables and shelf. Used tantalised roofing battens on the last one. They lasted 16 years and still going strong, so will be doing the same thing again

So I don't know about gas bottles paint, i assume its powder coated, but I made a bbq for the boss lady last week out of an old oil drum. I was umming and rrring about how to get all the paint off, having made a waste oil burner out of a gas bottle and remembering the pain staking process of grinding it all off I was in no rush to do that to a 200L drum. Alsa a brain wave not long before deadline ... Nitromorse, though it worked really well, all the paint was off in maybe 10 mins, and we had it kicking around the work shop, I realise it might not be such readily avaliable 'scrap' but might be worth a try. I'll test it out next week on an old gas bottle to see if it works and let you know.
