Someone on the transit forum says it's a 60's Sprite Alpine, he used to have one! 
Didn't realise till I got home and cut the padlock (keys lost) just how small it is. A nice dinky little 'van.
There was the usual amount of rubbish inside, like empty cans, dog food packet, and a letter from the council saying if it wasn't moved from some public car park it'd be getting detroyed

Definitely 70s, that white stripe down the side gives it away, about 72 to 75, unlike the safari, which was a prestige caravan, sprites were the "Ford" of the caravan industry, the serial number should give the year, does it have a manual reverse, or the sigma auto reverse, coupling.

No pics of progress, but have cleaned it inside and out, managed to get rid of the worst of the smell, and taken the curtains down. The rear window has been changed for some perspex (pig of a job). Front window is also smashed but not as bad so to save buying more perspex it's just getting patched up with tape and covered over. The sky light was missing and had a sheep feed bag taped over it, had a scrap of perspex just the right size for this furtunatly! Notice when I was up there the roof is dented, I guess whoever smashed the windows also jamp on the roof. 
Wheels have been painted white and I even polished the hub caps!
A frame painted black, and I notice some patches have been welded on there before

Also when I picked it up there was a small 7kg-ish butane bottle outside, connected up. I had no need for it so left it with the wifey. But on getting it home and cutting the lock I found a cylinder inside which I assumed was butane (blue) but close inspection of the worn out sticker says it's Arcton, supplied by ICI

I think arcton might be a refrigerant (CFC) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCFC-22 covers Arcton 4 and Arcton 22. Other Arcton numbers are different CFCs.

The Montreal Protocol agreed that ozone-depleting substances (ODS) including CFCs and HCFCs would be phased out globally. In Europe, CFCs (e.g. R12, R502) have been banned since 1994 and HCFC use (e.g. R22, R408A) has been banned in new equipment since 2000.
Take the bottle to a BOC or AP depot for disposal DONT VENT IT OFF.

On the outside it doesn't look too bad now. It just looks old, rather than pikey.
This may be temping fate like the last time but I plan on moving it to site tomorrow

There was (still is) a lot of bull flying around regarding cfc's. I worked for a couple of industrial refrigeration manufacturers in the '80s, spent about 8 or 9 years in the industry on system design and the like.
Even when the paranoia was at it's height, we were not required to report a leakage unless we dumped 400 tons of R502 in a single event. All of the plants were filled for test, then the gas was dumped to atmosphere and finally the system was evacuated and sealed for storage.
Releasing the quantity we are talking about here will not harm anything, but don't pass it through a naked flame - you will create phosgene (mustard gas) and that will kill you. Even saying that, refrigerant systems were always leak tested using a flame from a hand held butane burner with a hose on it. If there was a leak the flame would turn bright green instead of the normal yellow/blue.
The eventual result of the cfc thing is that we are all now using very inefficient refrigerators in our homes, and burning far more electricity to keep the inside at the same temperature. Yes, the gasses are harmful, but they are also naturally occuring.
I am sure you have all heard this one before - Shellfish (cockles, winkles etc) release more cfc's onto the air per year, than are contained in all of the domestic refrigerators in the world.
