New to welding, looking at buying my first set up, so currently digesting as much information from the forum as possible.

Going to be used at home in the garage so needs to run on house hold electrics.

Currently tarting up a 1993 Triumph tiger and like the idea of making my own engine crash bars and panniers rack. Also exhaust's patch ups.

So no real need to weld over 5mm mill but might be nice to be able to so I could practice.

I like the idea of attempting a bit of aluminium work.

So into Alice's rabbit hole I've gone trying to decide what to buy, budget would be around £300 and would be nice to get gas with the price tag

Happy to buy second hand, Clarke's and Sealey's are on the list as well as GYS Smartmig. Have seen the Static Arc Mig 200 which has had good reviews on here.

I'm also in no rush to buy but would like a new toy to play with !

I'm also considering saving a little more and go for a lower end Oxford.

But I have seen a Classic Mig 200 which i know is an older big machine but looks in very good condition and is not to far away for collection.

You may have to rethink your budget if you want to weld aluminium. Mig welding aluminium successfully below 4mm can be a challenge, ac tig is more suited for that.

Any advice is welcome, would the GYS 3 in one machines be a start ?

The GYS 3P is a good, basic machine for gas / gasless MAG and MMA welding but not AL.

i'd suggest get friendly with your local welding supplier, possibly O.W.S if in oxford
even if you get a mig elsewhere to start with and use them for gas/reg consumables.
or just get a baby stick off them like a gys or parweld to get going.
(my parweld 160A with lift tig came from them)
also, keep a look in your local BOC, they often have clearance deals.
lot's of options, just need a foot in the door

Just to update you all I've gone and picked up a used GYS 152
