Although I dont know why you need a serrated anvil? You can buy flat ones for it

you clamp a dial gauge to it as a thickness gauge

Its a comparator. Here is one variation which has a removable anvil that has both serrated and flat sides.

The serrations are so components with a good surface finish dont stick to it, (think of gauge blocks /slips when you ring them together.)

deffo if your measuring shims and ground parts everone should get one

The answer is....... If you already have a dial indicator, you have a comparator. The stand should scrub up easily, just be careful not to clean the serrated anvil with any abrasive. Its a handy item to have to measure duplicate parts you may wish to make.

We used to used similar to check if the wire was concentric to the coating of the electrode.......its important that the flux coating is consistent all way round, otherwise they burn lob sided.
