Anti-rust finish for a fire poker

Mrs Browser, wonderful woman that she is, bought be a days blacksmith experience at Chain Bridge Forge in Spalding for Xmas and a super day it was too. I got to make several pieces, one of which was a fire poker and I'm wondering now how to stop it from getting a coat of surface rust. If I oil it then heat it will this do the trick or would I be better using stove paint?

You could use stove or exhaust VHT aerosol paint yes.

Or there is also a black stove "paste" available from Stovax. That way you could touch it up fairly easily as its likely to get beat up quite a bit in use. I would go this route to be honest.

Rub a little sparingly with a rag. Wait a couple mins and buff off excess. Leaves a nice black matt finish. 1x tube will last you years.

Made mine at Kilhope Lead Mining Museum about 4 years ago. It's used daily and still looks like it did when I made it.

Ahh, Zebo remember granny blacking the range (oven and fire combined) every Thursday

Get it hot and dip it in oil (providing its a low carbon steel)...failing that, a small bottle of birchwood casey cold blue would do the job. Just need a bit of light oiling every now and then

When we went on a blacksmithing day course he had us heat the poker and rub wax into it. It has never been used as a poker but still looks good.
