I stupidly forgot to pick up a few cans of anti-spatter spray the other day when at the suppliers. The work pieces i am working on are getting full of spatter, is there any household chemical that will do the job until i buy the proper stuff ?
A lot of the American welders on their forum state that they use the spray cooking oil. their popular one is called Pam, but there will be quite a few in our supermarkets no doubt,
Is it high amp stuff or just little balls of splatrification? I don't like the smell of the spray or the residue so i generally just rub any spatter off with the nearest egde, or a chisel. If your in lowish amp dip transfer there shouldn't be spatter that wont rub off with a glove really, 350amp plus it's hard to avoid the odd stubborn barnacle even with the spray. Im almost there with my first ever tip dip purchase though
Its just i am up to my teats in a job at the moment and i was trying to get as much done with this good weather we have at the moment (large work so have to do it outside). Knocking off spatter with a chipping hammer or chisel is wasting my limited time.
Where I used to work they used to buy bulk barrels of veg oil and put it in old window cleaner bottles to get it to spray. Worked well and the ace smelt like chips when they welding
I use Solent Anti-spatter fluid from Cromwell Tools, mainly because it does an excellent job for a very reasonable price. I had a quick look at the Health & Safety data sheet and it is mainly water (90%), Glycerine (9%) and other "stuff". I stock Glycerine for topping the new hydraulic gauges I fit to a regular job, there's water in the tap, and I have some of Aldi's finest washing up liquid. So I have mixed up 100ml of this solution, fired up the R-Tech mig pushing 0.8mm A18 wire @ 210amps on some 10mm thick off-cuts and this home bodged Anti- spatter fluid works.
Yeah i can't and don't use silicone sprays in the shed anymore. The lathe and mill i use ordinary cheap motor oil to protect them from rust, and most other tools i have too.
I bought quite a few cans of spray anti-spatter ( cheap out of date) seems like the homemade stuff above, Came out of the nozzle like soapy water. but worked fine,
