Hello all. I am just after a bit of advice. I recently bought a Devilbiss JGA spray gun off Ebay on a bit of a whim without doing any research (as you do) and I think it has probably bit me on the bum.
The gun is an unused JGA 553. I’ve had it apart and it’s as clean as a whistle. It must be at least 25 years old as it’s come in the original box which looks like something from the 70s.
The thing is I think it is a pressure feed gun rather than a suction feed gun due to the specs and the fact that there was no paint pot with it. The air cap is a 797, the fluid tip is an AV-15-FZ-FCX and the needle is a JGA 402-FZ.
I have the following questions.
Am I right in thinking this is a pressure feed gun set up for huge CFM to shift shed loads of paint? I have looked at some technical specs on the web and I think the air cap and associated bits are big ones for large volumes of paint.
Is a pressure feed gun more or less the same as a suction feed gun or are they physically different? Basically, if I buy an underslung paint pot and swap the air cap, tip and needle for something more suitable can I use it as a suction feed gun or does the pressure feed gun require positive pressure from the paint source unlike a suction feed gun? I have looked at some exploded diagrams for JGAs and the pressure and suction feed guns use the same diagram so I suspect they are the same.
Is it worth my while buying and swapping the parts over as above? I suspect that it may be cheaper to buy another complete JGA which suits my purposes better.
I am just looking to spray a few panels on my kit car when I ever get it finished (not soon). I know it’s all a bit a false economy buying kit like this for the odd job but I’m treating this as a learning exercise. I don’t expect to get skilled at spray painting but it would be nice to say I’ve done it and at least had the experience and can appreciate what’s involved.
Any input would be gratefully received. I have looked on the web and all I seem to find is technical bulletins from devilbiss which assume you know what they are talking about already. There doesn't seem to be any idiot's guide for this idiot. This may teach me not to bid first and think later in future.
Here's picture as we all love pics.
