Any one use 6010 rods

I have been asked to repair and modify cattle feed barriers fairly soon before cattle come in
The steel is rusty and I know I will have to clean it before welding
I have been looking on YouTube and 6010 rods seem to be the best for this job
Anything I should know before I buy some
eg.. what is best brand?

They are the go-to rod in the US, not so much anywhere else unless you are in the pipe industry. Very few stockists here (AU) and probably a similar situation there.

What machine will you be using? Many inverters, and some transformers, will have trouble with them.

They do penetrate and they do tolerate rust etc but I don't think they are a license to forget cleaning.

I will be using 200amp DC engine driven welder generator
I will get rid of rust first
Most of the welding will be vertical

Too much American U tube can be confusing. If it were me Id be using the go to rod sold in almost every agricultural store….but a decent brand….6013.

Lots of vertical up maybe 7018.

OK, 6010 will do the job if you can get them easily. They are aggressive and fast solidifying but the weld is (often) not pretty and the slag is hard to remove.

Personally, I'd use 6013 or 7014. Or 7018 if I had open packets handy.

6013 takes a lot of beating , it would be my go to rod , 7018 if im pushed.

If it's really dirty and rusty steel 6012(Lincoln Supra) instead of 6013 or 7018
Fit for all positions, even vertical down. Rutile based flux, but also has some cellulose in it.

Rusty and not the thickest I would be leaning towards a more general purpose rod.

Try both polarities while you at it, they do make it act differently for sure.

I've worked on loads of stuff in cattle sheds and had no bother with 6013.

i use 6010 a fair bit, be careful using it on thin stuff I was repairing a box section gate last week that had unbeknown to me rotted from the inside, took me longer fixing the blow holes, great on heavy stuff though

I do have some, used them a bit for overhead but it's though on equipment and really not necessary for the stuff I do.
As others suggested if you are repairing rotten stuff it's most likely non critical stuff so you don't really need 6010 deep penetration and cleaning properties but remember about hydrogen because E6010 doesn't eliminate that.
I'd just clean everything as good as possible and even gasless flux core it up.
E6013 is a strange electrode, on flat and horizontal is lovely (almost) to run, but on vertical up it's another beast.
If you can source some E6011 instead they are easier to manipulate out of position, it's an easier E6010.
If thick enough E7018 all the way, it's actually my preferred electrode and the specific one I feel more comfortable with.
6013 tend to leave wormholes because of its thick slag layer you have to be good at it to prevent slag inclusions, problem is that you can be even very good at it, but sometimes while you are welding everything looks fine, cleaning off the slag you'll find holes and not even a welding beneath.
7018 has a more glass like slag and it's pretty hard to miss where you are actually depositing metal .
It's a learning curve but it probably gives the better results overall.
I'd go with flux core for the specific application
