The hosting company I use does a basic £3.50/month (£35/yr) for 5GB disk space...that and Wordpress would get you going for a number of sites
You used to be able to have a domain on google, but those services have all been rolled into Squarespace unless you a really big commercial user.
I don't know what it costs but the advertorials that some content creators do for Squarespace sponsorship make it look very easy to get going.

I use Wordpress for one site, the free one, and it's been OK and very easy to edit as it's a template site. For my actual hosting (web site and email) I switched to Mythic Beasts last year as their prices seemed to be very competitive. I used to use Ionos / 1&1 but it became a bit too much of a chore to keep cancelling and re-loading to get the cheap deal, and if it auto-renewed it went quite expensive.

I had a deal with ionos. They will add on billable "extras" from time to time, that, if you dont expressly refuse, they start charging for.
I would agree with you, and advise anyone to stay away from them.

I used wix, not the cheapest, but easy enough to use, just pick an example template and edit it. All these things seem to keep offering you extras for more money!
What I will say….if you want it found easily, you want your own domain, not piggybacked onto a big suppliers. And then spend time on your SEO!

You could stick a couple of pages on my server. Have you got a domain name?
Word press is GUI rather than code.
A basic free template is easy to sort.
It what you want it for that counts.
