Arc Mig gloves without the fluff !?

Hey all,

My beloved gloves are nearly passed on, getting a bit sick of burnt thumbs. They are just cheap ones I think, but are fairly thick leather and plain cotton lined. Ideally I want similar but every pair I try are lined with fleecy fluff, just not keen on the oven mitt size or feel of it. Tig gloves are a little thin for the stick stuff, any recommendations I'm not too bothered on cost I just want leather with cotton liner?

We have the gloves with the fleecy type lining at work but after a couple of days they aren't nearly as bulky. You could try rigger gloves and sleeves.

have a look in the garden centre type places for gauntlets for handling roses-I have a pair and they are unlined, they are lighter weight than standard arc gloves.

If you want cotton lining look in same shop for cotton work gloves as liners, but also motorcycle clothing outlets for silk inner gloves which will be thinner(avoid man made textiles for welding jobs I reckon).

By using liners you can wash the liners to keep them fresh.

Might work for you.

I use Wenaas Odin 6488 gloves or full length welding gloves, there is no fluff lining in them

Yeah some good ideas thanks, they guy at the my local welding shop said they would be hard to find now. Cant help but think that synthetic fleece is a bad idea in welding gloves though, probably EU rules to make them more flammable..

screwfix. Red mig gauntlets, thick hide and no fleece. About 4 quid iirc and last me ages. I only replaced the last pair cos my missus decided to wear them to do the gardening and ruined them...

ive got a few pairs even a free pair that a few people got through the forum in a round about way, but the pair I seem to use most (for some unknown reason) have a hole in the end of the index finger and weld manages to find its way in I should bin them but by the time I get home I forget about it, until the next burn

Yeah mine are just like that!

Sounds perfect, even better I can use the company trade to get them. As they are for work, in a roundabout sort of way

at that price i was happy to treat them as a consumable but ive not managed to wear a pair out yet just through welding cutting and burning lol

What kind of welding are you doing? MIG? TIG? Stick? Oxy/gas? Although one good pair of oxy/gas gloves should do for any of them they might not be ideal due to limited 'feel'. I started out using a thick (ish) pair of £ shop gardening gloves for MIG, but I destroyed them shifting a load of oil so I replaced them with a pair of leather ones which have proved to be fine so far. However TIG is another story as your hands will be much closer to the hot puddle so TIG gloves should be easier to use and may last longer. On stick almost anything will do as your hands should be well clear of the hot metal virtually all the time - unless you're careless (been there, done that, got the T-shirt, etc.). Oxy/gas however is a dangerous method as there's a significant chance that blobs of hot/molten metal will be flying all over the place. As such gloves just aren't enough so you should opt for gauntlets or 'welding sleeves'.

Apart from gas welding, its not just the heat from the weld but the radiated uv light you need protection from.

i find my left hand is usually always close to the puddle be it mig or arc. Obviously its further away with tig as its feeding rod

Even thin cotton will give some protection from UV, but certainly not from a spark much less a flying blob of molten steel.

Having arc welded - in the dim, distant past - without any protection I still bear the scars to prove the stupidity of it. Never again!

I have a picture somewhere of my brothers back after he spent most of the day simply turning away from me when I called eyes. you would honestly think he had been on a sunbed for a few days the amount of peeling skin and sore red sunburn. he had a cotton t-shirt on and it gave little to no protection at all to the light given off from my mig

Thanks I keep my tig gloves for tig, or indeed sometimes gas when I rarely use it. But I was asking about mig/arc gloves without the fleece lining as per the title and first post I'll always go for full length welding gloves so I can tuck my sleeves of my welding jacket in when I'm welding overhead on my car, rather than short gardening type ones. Most of my stick welding is on site for work and that tends to be positional as well, I like to burn the rods down to the nub so need thick gloves!

I'll call by screwfix and get some that BB suggested next week when I'm back out in the van
