Arc Weld Strength

Hello,

You can tell im new to this; Making up some rocksliders for the land rover...they're made from 40x80x4mm box section and there are plates that ive bolted to the chassis (which ive strengthened) made from 5mm plate.

Where these plates meet the box section I plan to arc weld them....im just a little concerned about the strength of the joint, considering that it'll take lots of weight when the car is jacked from under here.

Ive got 3.2mm rods, and I reckon around 120amps would do? The bits I welded on the chassis had full penetration (you could see the shape of the weld on the other side) so the welds were ok I think..

Have attached a drawing (looking down from the top at the joint) with the weld high-lighted in red..

Are these welds strong enough?! You can tell im a little paranoid!

Does your drawing show a section through the box section?, if so you need to rotate the 5mm plate through 90° as it will flex in the plane shown.

Are the sliders just for your vehicle?, if building them for others please consider the safety implications and possible come-backs on yourself.

No thats taken from looking directly down on the joint...the plate is around 80mm deep, and 5mm thick...you can only see the top of this plate from this drawing.

Im just making them for myself, but I need to ensure they're as strong as possible as I dont want these to bend or break.

Heres a rough photo of how they're usually made...space is tight so its hard to put anything else there...one the rear outriggers might have angle iron welded to it to stop it flexing.

Sounds like a good plan then, don't forget to consider for and aft movement when you hit something or a rock gets between wheel and slider.
