Arc welding galvanized steel what mask filters

I know I know loads of threads on this but I can't find anything to say what mask to use, just use a mask comments.

I intended to grind off the coating and will be outside.

I have 3m half mask (6000 series I think) but I always get lost in what filter I need. Have the basic pink ones at them moments as it mainly used for sanding.

Also any tips for getting it all to fit under welding mask?

In years gone past - I have had mild "metal fume fever" - sort of mild flu like symptoms.

I just avoid the task now...

Welding outside I wouldn't worry too much.

P3 filters will stop zinc fume, no need to grind it off first. I have no problem welding galv or casting brass with a mask on.

I've had fume fever before without masks, its extremely unpleasant, and just being outside is not adequate!

Apart from the fact that the zinc will spit at you and often produce a bad quality weld! Better to weld with clean steel!
