arduino or raspberry pi, which one?

Both have interested me for a while and (as if I don't have enough on the go) I was thinking of getting one of the all in kits to have a play.

Which one would you go with and why?

Depends what you are doing, I have a few Raspberry Pi's running various things but they are quite complicated, below is a pic of one running a repeater

I've used an Arduino in the past to pull info from various sensors and the obd port and display it all on a custom gauge

Depends on the application.

Raspberry pi is a computer and can be purposed for many things, whereas arduino is just a microcontroller board.

I have 2x Pi in my house, one is a media server for the tv upstairs and the second is used to interface with my 3d printer.

I’m using a raspberry pi for some home automation with very little coding required. I made a control panel for an extractor fan with an arduino and the sketch on that is completely the opposite, all coded so really depends on what you are looking to do

I'd go Pi for a nas, the 4 is available with 8GB of ram and native usb boot, so could boot from ssd or an nvme

Haha, dont bother booting from a usb stick, either use the sd card or get some usb3 to sata or nvme drives and boot from that. It's in beta at the minute but full instructions online

I use both - depends on the application.
Brilliant for kids as well - I understand they are actually teaching kids proper computer stuff now. Not just teaching them to use office type programs!
Like being back in the days of the BBC Model B or even the 380Z

Pi for stuff that you might use a pc for - it’s really a mini pc (though it can do a whole lot more, like controlling inputs and outputs etc). I think of arduino as more of a plc replacement as it’s more suited to stuff like controlling inputs/outputs and doesn’t really have an “operating system” as such.

There is some crossover in what they can do but I’d say as a general rule you are able to do more with a pi - but on the flip side an arduino is probably easier to configure if you just need the io control.

Summarised quite well by others - the Raspberry Pi is basically a tiny computer (actually a pretty powerful one these days) but with some easier to access hardware for controlling things. It's trivial to connect things like cameras, USB devices etc to it like you would on a computer. For example a couple of evenings ago I knocked together a motion detecting trail camera like thing to put inside my Mum's duck shed, something had been attacking the eggs so she wanted to see what was going on. Raspberry Pi 4, Camera, DC switch mode supply and an old tractor battery to power it, together with a bodged together case. The Pi even acted as it's own WiFi hotspot so I could see the picture on my laptop or phone next to it (it was the other end of the yard to the existing WiFi signal).

The Arduino (there is a better alternative) is basically if you want to talk and control electronics at a lower level - controlling a remote control vehicle or something like that.

I wouldn't use an Arduino though for that kind of stuff - they're not that cheap anymore and you can use ST's Nucleo boards which are pin-compatible with the Arduino's, can be programmed using the same environment, much more powerful processor and under half the price last time I looked.

I am far from an expert with either pi or arduino but learning as i go has been fun with both, my next purchase of arduino is some LED lights to light up glass blocks, the last lot i did were just RGB strips of LED with 4 wires so you can make any colour but now you can turn on any LED in the strip and have any colour still with only 4 wires.

I developed a quite a complicated control system with a couple of AT Mega's and Ardublock http://blog.ardublock.com/ a graphical programming system for it, which unfortunately is no longer being developed but still perfectly useable.
I probably should have put some labels on it though, it made sense at the time !

The 4 has gigabit ethernet too so ideal for a nas.

A few years ago I made a complete fuel injection system for my mini, including ignition timing using a pic 16f877 and a developer board. Worked quite well, but it took forever to get my head around how to do it. I was going to develop a commercial efi system. The gui bit never got done so the project stalled.
By a long way the most difficult bit was the ignition timing - converting timing pulses to rpm and calculating engine position was hard work with that processor.

I started from scratch (ie zero computer knowledge) and ended up with a pre-war Austin seven revcounter, temp gauge, oil pressure and warning lights. Wish I could have got an Arduino ignition system. Would save a lot of aggro.
