Auto darkening helmet not darkening

Just bought a new auto helmet from ebay, left it out all day to charge, then decided to shine a torch into the sensors at the front to test it, when doing this it goes dark as it should for less than a second then goes back to normal and i can see the torch light shining through, it then goes dark only when the torch is moved from side to side.

Is this normal?

Will my eyes be damaged?

Try looking at a florescent light.
A steady source of light will not trigger them properly.

To test my new helmet I simply put it on.. flipped it down.. and sparked a cigarette lighter infront of my face.

Never even saw the spark.. was very impressed. (my first helmet!)

pop it on and try grinding will soon be in the dark

Not all of 'em respond to visible light (my speedglas won't respond to sunlight/bulbs/flourescents but will darken from lcd flatscreens and other odd things) so it might be normal, sounds like it's working anyway. They all (should) provide full UV/IR protection whether switched on or off, passive or dark i.e. getting 'flashed' while wearing one is like some jerk setting off a camera flash right in your face rather than a proper arc flash

Try pointing a TV remote control at it

If your eyes start aching a few hours after you have welded then you might need to do a bit of fine tuning with the delay control switch or shade selection knob, best of luck mate!
