Auto darkening helmets

Hi,

Seen a couple of threads regarding auto helmets recently, this has reminded me to ask a potentialy embarssing question.

Before my Clarke died I was rebuilding a kit car, the origional had a fibre glass seat tub that I've chopped out and am now in the process of welding in a frame, problem was when welding in and around chassis rails my mask would go clear if my head strayed any where near an obstruction.

Is this just me being a numpty letting something get between the mask and the arc or is my Silverline helmet crap?

Unfortunately that is one of the problems with the cheaper end of the market helmets.

Some are more sensitive than others. I put masking tape over the sensors on mine and it still triggers when using my plasma. Will trigger if I use the die grinder.

Also, some have more than 1 sensor. mine has 2 on left/right above the LCD>

Im waiting for a Portamig at the moment so may as well look at helmets too.

I've seen another thread mentioning Esab Eyetech's, any other recommendations?

I like my Speedglas, but mine is an obsolete model, so can't exactly recommend you go and buy one like mine!

Think they start at about £90. Nice thing is they use replaceable batteries.

Saw a few shots of the bodyshop at Ferrari's Scaglietti plant and they all had Speedos.
