Since I'm now sort of retired I don't really need the towing capacity of my l200 so I'm thinking of getting something like a mitsubishi outlander, vw touareg , volvo cx90 or something similar. Still need to be able to tow a couple of ton o casionaly and drive on rough tracks. Looking at 2010 11 and 12 ish models any one any experience of these or anything else I should add to list.

VW Touarag with V6 petrol engine a gem - they all (touarags) got expensive to repair suspension (over complicated).
XC90 - OK - but handbrake shoes in discs always a MOT failure - even from new - the shoes just not big enuf - mech' for tensioning them very complicated and expensive to repair.

Not sure what I would buy in the passenger carrying light 4x4 range at 14yrs old. Because that is what a 2010/11/12 plate motor is now. V6 petrol Touarag a nice motor to drive thou (diesels just too f##king expensive to keep on the road - parts wise)

We had a 2.3L diesel Outlander, nice big car with 7 seats or a massive boot with the rear seats folded down, mid to high 30's mpg.
These have the engine with the knocking balance shaft problems though, makes it sound like a knackered London taxi at idle. Easy fix is to take the balance shaft coupler out. Took me about three hours as it's a sump off job but the thing was lovely after that!
Loads have been driven for miles after this with no further problems.

The Touareg and Porsche Cayenne are basically the same vehicle but parts will be Porsche prices !
Old touaregs don't make much money. That's probably why.

I had a v6 tdi Touareg for a few days as a loan car when the missus golf gti was in the garage back in about 2011 (the then new shape mk2 had just come out). Was an amazing car, so luxurious and that engine was sublime - fast smooth and quiet.
Can only comment on how it drove and not any long term stuff so probably not much help sorry!

Ive just been to town and back on pretty slippery roads and passed a car in a ditch, I was driving my mums Mitsubishi outlander, the plug in hybrid one

There's a mod for the handbrakes which is just replacing the original fixed length spacer piece between the shoes with a standard style toothed adjustable spacer so you have a fighting chance of getting them to MOT standard.
