As on previous thread I am trying to put together a compressor - if some people use a propane cyclinder - what would be the thoughts on using an empty oxygen cyclinder as I have had one knocking around for years. It's not full size - it's a baby one - but can I be certain it's absolutely empty !

There's a few issues.
It may belong to a gas company and they tend to be a bit sniffy about people purloining their cylinders, unlike LPG cylinders where they don't seem to give a monkey's.
If there's any oxygen in it it could cause any oil in your air to ignite and quite possibly explode.
To be sure it's empty you'd need to remove the valve and fill it with water, VERY dangerous if there's pressure inside and I doubt whether you'd shift it anyway.
Best return it to its owners.

Thanks for the advice. It's my cyclinder but I will dispose of it safely.

Also bye the bye can I assume you can use any size pump to fill any size receiver it's just a question of how long you have to wait - so in theory a small pump - say 9cfm max/10 bar needing 2hp to drive it will fill a 300 litre

You MUST remove every last trace of propane because mixing it with air will form an explosive mixture.
Any pump will fill any tank eventually, but you have to watch the duty cycle of the compressor, this is usually expressed as a percentage, and refers to the run time over half an hour (IIRC) so 50% is fifteen minutes on with 15 mins off, and so on.

If I have to be careful with a propane cyclinder - for instance unscrew the valve and fill with water before trying air - is that any different from being extra careful with the oxygen cyclinder.............
