As every one is different. The weight they can comfortably lift is different. Do what YOU are comfortable with. Not what your mate can lift or what someone tells you to lift. Bad Backs from lifting One of the most common workplace accidents. Dont use your back use your legs. keep the back vertical.

There is no legal limit.
We stuck with 25kg for military projects but now that they have lumpy fronts on tech duties we are down to 15kg.

had to leave work this morning because i have put my back out lifting bmw x5 wheels. they probley are geting on for 50kgs!

Back down under we designed components to max 28 kg but as said above it looks like there is no legal limit here. I guess it really does depend on the item and how you're lifting it / where you're lifting it to. Remember the crane lifting the digger posted a few weeks back....

Risk assesment, it is stated that no person (male) shall attempt a lift no heavier than 25Kg maximum, 10Kg if lifting from shoulder height to above, ie, stacking high shelves. There are even different weight lift recommedations from varying lifts from the floor, to the height of the knees and hips.

More coloquially known as lumpy jumpers in the navy....
Lumpy fronts or slotted airmen but it was a while ago is not PC nowadays.

It varies on where you're lifting it from and to, size & shape of load, how far away from body etc.
We had a slip of a girl at work who was limited to lifting 6kG after risk assesment!

It's all about suing. If you aremade to lift over the recommended weights and have an injury you can sue if its below then you cant. Similarly if you are sackedd because you cant lift a certain weight over the reccimended you have grounds for unfair dismissal.

Noticed that sacks of cement went from 50kg to 25kg when I moved here. But ones from Spain at the local B&Q are 35kg?
When I was with a crop dusting outfit, the Finns used to compete on lifting. Both of them could pick up a 200lt barrel of Avgas and put it in the van. That is 150kg plus the drum... Not a lot of H S&E around then. Specially as we used to drive around with 2x drums in the back of a Minivan. Ah..those were the days...

i had a bad back and have been plagued by back problems simce i worked as a plasterers labourer (carrying 2 x 40kg bags plaster etc) had years of pain and been and had it so say fixed year after year, until i started my workshop, i couldnt sit or lie down, in a right state, couldnt drive, pick anything up,
So saw in the local paper an advert saying this guy could fix my back permanently, i was in such a state i was willing to try anything, partner drove me there, i had to wind the seat right back and try to lie on my side, staggered like a 90 yr old to his door, went in, guy asks a couple of questions, bends me over a stool (not a special stool) pull my trousers down a little (wait for it) and touches my lower back he is saying stuff like, have i been in a accident about 20 years ago, im lying there thinking ive been stitched right up,
he presses on my back in certain places says stand up, and then touch my toes (no chance i said) straight down touched toes, couldnt believe it, fixed
i drove home perfectly and was laying bricks and block next day, and have been back a few times where ive overworked myself,
Now every morning i have a good stretch like a dog or cat and im fighting fit, oh and keep your back warm, works and the guy knows his stuff, if anyone in gloucestershire or willing to travel i have his details, and can vouch for him 100%

I hurt my back answering the phone! I reached across the desk and I got the worst pain I'd ever experienced, I thought I was going to be in wheelchair for the rest of my life.
Doctor didn't seem too bothered, just told me to have warm baths rather than showers. Still get a twinge if I'm not careful.
