Ball joint taper angle

I want to re-taper some hubs for a different balljoint , but im not sure what reamer to get,
Any ideas on working it out? the balljoint i want to use go's from 14mm at the small end to about 17mm where i want it to sit 15mm down the taper.

On re measuring it's more like 15mm to 16.5mm over 15mm so that's 1mm in every 10mm of length.

Thanks for the offer Bob but I'd sooner buy one as it's a job I'll need to do a few times, the balljoint is rover 25 and the hub is micra, the taper seems right but not big/deep enough

The angle is given by arctan (0.75/15) = 2.86deg

I'm not sure ? How is it 0.75mm over 15mm? Sorry if I'm being daft.

Yes... if you can get more accurate measurements then the taper will probably work out to a standard

EDIT: double the calculated angle to get the inclusive angle

90% of these joints are 7.15 degree taper Woody, some oddball ones are 10degree, Yanks measure them in inches to the foot, in this case 11/2" to the foot. They cost a fortune but you could get a 7 or 8 degree reamer reground and you will save money. Happened across mine on Ebay, no one else bid because it never registered with anyone what they are used for Langy was the last person to use my one.

It's easier to calculate as a right angled triangle, hence using half the measured diameter. The taper angle is twice that i.e. 5.72°

I went to buy one, but they were expensive and I managed to borrow one
I think they were either 1:8 or 1:10, so that's 7.15degree or 5.725degree
Drill service had them on the shelf but they were expensive

How easy does it remove material if I put it in the mill?

If that is correct then it is a 1:10 taper like you say and that is a standard taper, at least it is for metric prop shafts taper for boats and this 5.7248 degrees included angle.

Nah, well I do have a 1:10 reamer but will be slightly too big for your needs

the alternative is make a bush on the lathe that you can press into the hole in the hub (which you will have to drill so its not tapered anymore).
no need for an expensive tool then.
the vw lads do it on hubs when flipping the track rod ends up side down to eliminate bump steer on lowered cars.
