Basecoat fault

Yesterday I painted a sample plate with some metallic basecoat to check the colour is what I'm looking for, I used equal amounts of paint and basecoat thinners.

When the paint sprayed on it looked ok, but after a few minutes the flake in the paint formed patterns and when it flashed off it looked mottled (like a miniature giraffe coat pattern).

Is this a fault in the paint or might it have been due to the temperature (about 10c) and the thinners taking too long to evaporate?

I'm sort of thinking its temp but would like some more expert opinions if poss.

Exactly what was the substrate and did you spray it in light coats??

Over 2k primer, I might have laid it a little thick to be honest.

Try again in 3 light coats with 10 mins flash off time per coat and report back.

Are you sure it thins 50-50 ??? Some are 2-1
It shouldn't be applied thickly

Ah, I'll check with the supplier.

It's been a while since I did any painting, to say I'm a little rusty would be an understatement

Is gun good, even paten on sheet of card, are overlaps consistent, warmer would help & is mix correct

Autopaint international in st helens, it's just a plain white tin with their sticker on and colour code filled in.

I'll phone them in morning, their website says 60:40 but not whether 60 refers to paint or thinners

Paint to thinners on data sheets usually so 60 paint to 40 thinner. 50:50 would not be that far out.

if its patchy you need to screw the fluid in a couple of turns ..make sure your 2 bar inlet to gun then set spray pattern in to take of the ends

apply 1 med / light coat let flash

then 1 med wet coat flash

another med wet coat

tbh your much better with max meyer water based

Autopaint, yeah classy stuff , I'm not surprised its not on the tin.
