Basic advice for treating bare metal and welded patches

Hi can I get some advice regarding the preparation and painting when it comes to covering welded panels on a car.

So heres my uno turbo project below



So am I correct in saying I should grind all the surface rust down weld over where required, then sand paper with a corse grit then apply some Zinc 182 building up the layers?

patching over the top or rust is not ideal it will start rusing again ideally you need to let a piece in there are various choices of primer epoxy seems to be the best, give the steel a go over with some 240 gritt prior to priming, it is also better to prime straight away instead of letting your new steel start to rust as its not always that easy to get rid of once it has started

Cheers those weld plates were done by the previous owner but god knows why they wernt treated too

So I intend to grind them back the sand back then prime like you suggest.

Ive heard vinegar water is good for eating surface rust?

never tried it but i would imagine it would take ages, probably quicker with citric acid

in that case they are hideous and i agree with pdg get rid of them and make a better job of it

Ok cheers lads, think I will grind it all back make it easier on the eye and treat the hell out of it all lol

As the others said redo them bits and make a decent job, Epoxy primer is your friend here

As said, remove those awful patches, cut the remaining rust out below, then weld new steel in. Butt weld, not overlap. Sometimes easier to cut and shape new plate (you have to do this step anyway) most people just weld this over the rust now. For a better job, hold it in place and scribe round it. Then cut on the scribe lines. This gives you a perfect fitting patch, all rust removed with less than a 1mm gap around the patch depending on how close to scribed line you cut.

Ok sound advice from you all, cheers will get some more sheet metal and tackle it all again.

Uncommon sight these days an Uno Turbo. Have a good look under the wheel arch at the repair, if Mr Blobby left the top unpainted he might have put all his effort into skimming the inside with filler and underseal.

Yeah looks like the novice has left the metal bare under the arch too, luckily the car hasn't been driven like so, I can grind it all back and treat underneath aswell.

Been looking into panel wipe, is this just a simple wipe on wipe off motion? ok to prime over it once dried/removed?

if those old patches are overlapped (looks like they are) they will be happily rotting away between car and patch so cleaning up what you can see will make no difference
