BBQ anyone?

Hi everyone.

I've been asking around for a while, trying to get an oil drum to build a BBQ out of. Taken ages to find any drums at all. and then all of a sudden, 4!

I decided to keep 2, a smaller 9 gallon 1 I'm gonna make and use myself, the other 55 gallon I'm intending to make and sell.

Which leaves 2 55 gallon drums goin unused. 1 is galvanised, the other painted. They have a small amount of red diesel left in them. You'd have to collect, and I only ask a minimal fee (few beers) to keep the missus happy.

Anyone interested? Let me know

Where did ya get the grilling racks from tho? I'm strugglin finding anything

Just so happens, Baking/Cooling racks (4 of them) fit perfectly, using three bars (can just see the bars in top pic)

You can just about see the legs on the racks in the top pic.

about a quid each from Wilko, they've been perfect for cooking on.

Nice looking BBQ you should make a lid for one side. Then if you ever want to cook a whole chicken or large piece of meat you can do it no problem with the lid on it acts like an oven
Pop a can of beer and put it in which the chicken taste absolutely fantastic now I'm making myself hungry
Post some of the measurements and materials you used would love to make one of them myself happy BBQ guys

Yuh i would have made a lid out of the other half, if that hadn't already been put aside to make another BBQ for someone else.

Nice BBQ, anyone built a smoker

Nice BBQ Davie. I am planning to do the same, and have found some drums on ebay not too far away (am north bucks). I like the baking tray idea, I had also been wondering about grills. If they are that small, they could go in the dishwasher too :-)

Has anyone here built a smoker. It seems to be a very US thing, but I have has a turkey cooked on a proper smoker for 12 hours at thanksgiving when I was over there and it is fantastic. My current plan is to try to build a fire box and wood chip tray onto the bottom of my Tesco's Webber clone. Anyone got any tips on building (or running) a smoker ?

You could maybe make a good one out of an old 47kg propane cylinder, theres plans out there on the web if you do a google search.

With all the BBQ's i have bought over the years i have always made sure it has a warming shelf above the grill otherwise all the food needs to be eat at once whereas you can cook what you like when you like and pop it on the shelf to keep warm until someone wants it.

looks nice, I like BBQ food, maybe some sheet Stainless bent and welded would make a good barrel equivalent, the same for the grill with thin rod.

Stainless is good for hygeine purposes I heard.

I have a local chemical company here and they sell 205 lt oil drums at a £1 each, had several for a veg oil filter.

Well got started today, finally.

Nowhere near finished yet, but at least i got a framework built.

At this rate, might be finished just in time to store it for the winter.

Let me know wot ya think of the pics, and I'll be honest, the pic of the weld is by far the best of the lot. The rest look like the bottom of a budgie cage. Plenty grinding to do me thinks!!!!

Guess its kind of worring no one has made a comment davie lol. Think everyone is waiting for you to finish it, and then for you to sent out invites via the board for its maiden voyage. I assume its being done with gasless wire

B : - Bring a bottle of Jack Daniels

DO we have to drink half the bottle of the JD before we look at the BBQ lol.

I thought it was gasless either that or you had a serious problem with gas flow. I have never used gasless, but it will look fine with a nice grind up. No weld is complete until it has been ground up.

This is the first time I've seen your pics. How did you manage to hide them like that? Must have been lost on a forum busy day.

So, an un-naturally wide weld with a bit of spatter. It's fine for the job, but what kit are you using there? Click on the User CP link on the top left and edit profile and you'll find the forum will now demand to know that sort of thing.

Beleive me some of the welding looks like I drank a bottle of JD befre I started!!!!!

Maybe I should try that as a new technique?????


It'd probably look 'ok' after a bottle!!

Will post some more pics when I get time to do some more 'welding?'.

And I use the term VERY loosely.
