any one ever had an axle bearing fail in this manner? had only been installed about a week on my Toyota Tacoma. rear wheel came off damaging axle splines. bearing wasn't hammered on, pressed in, required making a tool to remove old bearing and install new 1. beck arnley bearing, but chi-com manufactured.i do not have a Toyota dealer anywhere close to me I thought beck arnley would be ok on quality. bearing made a popping noise and then wheel and axle started coming out. I have been installing bearings for 50 years+ and have never had this type of failure. local supplier and beck arnley cust service have been less than helpful or interested. thoughs or opinions are welcome and appreciated
these appear to be stress cracks to me. in the us, it is impossible to buy American made bearings anymore. I used a 20 ton press, my small one, to install bearing went in smooth not a hard push at all. I just got back from an 800 mile round trip at highway speeds. my initial thoughts are bad heat treatment too hard . most chic-com bearings are shipped with 2 little grease in them. I popped out 1 side dust seal packed bearing half full with synthetic grease and installed.
Looks like the halfshaft has walked out sideways and thats what has done the bearing, is this the kind of set up that has a shrink sleeve behind the bearing to keep it all in place ?
no has a spacer and what we call here a lock ring , lock ring broken in the middle spacer not damaged, maybe pushed out by the broken piece of bearing , not a real good design I think but it works. pulled other side undamaged. picture cant show very well but inner race looks like to me it shattered and broke all at 1 time .
yes axle rides in inner race it is ok , outer race rides in a hub fit in it is ok, bearing didn't come out of hub. even though lock ring was broken by I guess you could call it chip coming out of inner race
I had one on the back of a Corsa that did that a couple of times. It was spinning on the stub axle which had been damaged. New stub axle and bearing fixed it.
that bearing has some damage, but to a point it's still intact as in the inner race still looks located in the outer race so how did the wheel come off ?
did something come loose and cause the bearing to fail eg hub walking off and 1 bearing trying to hold the wheel true, ( is it called radial force in bearing terms ? ) anyway it looks to me like something has been trying to rag the inner race out.
axle goes thru inner race held in place by spacer and lock ring in groove in axle shaft. axle came through bearing out in the road. splines damaged by turning in the end of axle housing. lock ring found in axle tube spacer there also not damaged or broken. exactly same method used to install other side no damage to it remove to look at.
if your axel is like the one sgown in this piccy my guess is the snap ring was weak and pushed out of its groove rendering the bearing retainer ineffective and allowing the half shaft to walk, im thinking as soon as it walked out the diff it would have been unsupported at that end, this would have massivly overloaded the bearing causeing the fail shown potenialy tho i'm suprised it didnt bust the lot out but it would have made a fair noise crack or bang and id think the wheel and shaft would have rapidly left at this point as its now very negativly camberd so its going to be trying it hardest to walk out
as far as i can see unless you actually bust the inner race out from the outer race, destroying the cage and scattering all the balls there is no way for the half saft to come out unless the snap ring comeing off is the actaul original failure and everything else is an effect
the lock ring breaking was my first thought also. I guess it is a question of what came first the chicken or the egg. did the bearing split a piece out of inner race that pushed out spacer and broke lock ring or did lock ring break and let axle come out and damage bearing? these were new lock rings , they aren t as hard as snap rings. I have seen axles come out of larger trucks before due to broke axle studs but nothing like this. I heard a loud pop and the axle was out and the backing plate on the pavement in less than 10 feet. lock ring was not bent but broke in the middle.
