Beaver Scroll saw

Picked this up today having taken a chance on Ebay, I felt it would be a great little addition to my workshop, It's a Beaver scroll saw circa 1963. It runs very well and just needs a cleaning. I was contemplating a full strip down, paint, etc but I think I'll just polish up the brightwork, clean any threads etc and keep it original, I'll wipe over with main body with some light oil and get some use out of it .

I think most motors of that era ran at 1450 rpm so if it was similar size pulleys that could well be the number of strokes/min.

Notice the one above has geared pulleys so may offer something like 750 1450 and 2000+ ish, seems a lot of strokes/min to me though.

The guy I bought it from bought it new in 1963, I told him I was planning on wiring in a foot switch as I thought it would be more user friendly, he told me they used to just switch it from a wall socket but H&S made them put a switch on the stand in the nineties (this was just a standard rocker switch mind), those were the days

cheers Steve, I was in two minds about whether to go for it or not but am now really pleased I did, I have found some blades which claim to be able to cut metal up to 3mm thick and am hoping I can cut the odd profile etc for the garden bits and pieces I like to make. I think the bed is cast and as you say it has a lovely patina I think its the natural oil and resin from years of cutting wood. as to the speeds I will have a look if it says anything on the motor and measure the pulley sizes, I am sure someone on here will be able to work out the blade speed from that

That's a cracking bit of kit Norm. That's definitely no lighweight in build quality. Btw, if that bottom cylinder uses oil, you want to drop that out and replace it. If it's owt like mine was, it had an inch or two of oil & sawdust sludge in the bottom when I got it.

Cheers Matt, It sort of did its own partial oil change on the journey home as I had laid it on its side so it would be more stable in the car not noticing the tiny vent hole in the plaque cover in the side, what grade oil do you reckon I should put back in there.

Finally, someone else barring me has done that trick. Gets me every time, either a cylinder, damper or gearbox. Was beginning to think it was just me who had shonky luck in that regard.

what grade oil do you reckon I should put back in there.

I've just put standard motor oil in mine, a mix of 10/40 and 15/40. The manufacturers specified oil type for mine is Shell Vitrea 33, if I recall correctly, so I assume yours would be similar. I don't know what that would compare to in the modern oils though.

From researching into oil for the Tom senior mill, Shell Vitrea 33 is ISO68 (SAE20 engine oil or SAE80 gear oil)

Cheers. It was probably the gear type oil, if I remember correctly. Seem to recall it had that type of odour to it.

Not sure, it's bloody heavy though! It also has a disc on it that looks like it's designed to have sandpaper stuck to it.

No motor unfortunately, hence the question about speed.

I got it off Freecycle and just put it to one side until I get a round tuit.

Bit of necromancy.
Only info I could find on the meddings speed was this post.
Running a 2740rpm motor on the second slowest speed will give me 450 to 1300 rpm on the VFD so should be perfect.
Will be running this afternoon.
