Been given a brand new, 20 year old Murex DC135

Friend of my Fathers has just given me a brand new in box Murex DC135

It must be 20 plus years old, but it is brand new! Both leads, remote and instructions in box. Chap got made redundant in 1994 and brought it home on his last day and it has stood in his garage ever since. Chap is moving to a bungalow with no garage so thus the tidy up.

1. It weighs a ton for a 135amp welder (about 30kg).

2. The fuse rating is 32amp at 240volt.

3. Duty cycle is only 15% at 125amps. (60% @ 60amps)

But it is a DC welder, so I am going to burn some rods today to see if it any good!

Anybody used or owned one before?

Langy on here has one in his garage he doesn't generally use,
I tried it out when i was over there, seemed to weld fine, Murex stuff is normally pretty good,

Langys Murex is probably for sale if anyone else needs one?

Just done the weld test!

1x lump of scrap 8mm plate.

Ran 3x 3.2mm 6013 max amps of 135A

One after the other in quick succession!

Welder did not trip or blow the 13amp plug fuse I fitted to it. (so you can ignore the rating plate on the back)

Welder was in warm garage at about 18 degrees C.

Conclusion... Apart from the physical weight of it and the crappy electrode holder. (Will buy Myking type off ebay). I could not be more pleased with the gift!

Needed to run some "shrinking beads" around the inside of some bearing races down fairly deep recesses - no room for the mig so dug out an old Max Arc buzz box that hadn't seen the light of day for years - weighs a ton but got job done!

I can remember Murex brand stuff years back, it was well thought of, we had Oxford oil cooled sets in the shops, but I am pretty sure we had a Murex for some site work. Nice one-free welder- can't be bad.

Just ordered a 200amp ESAB electrode holder from WELDEQUIP £13.80 delivered!

That's a nice result I'd say.
Don't worry about the duty cycle murex stuff it top banana and it will be built for the job.
A lot of old murex machines have high fuse ratings and like yourself I've just tried them on a lower and it's been all good.
Hope it serves you well, at 30kg I'd say your first project with it should be to build a trolly
