Been given a welder, opinions please

I have been gettingf more and more fed up with my sip 170 migmate. I spoke to a mate and they have just got a nice new fronius welder so he has given me his old welder.

I have only had a quick go with it so far. Are they any good? He said they were having some wire feed issues with it but it seemed ok to me. Whats the situation with getting spare?

Yea I used to have 2 off these in a sheet metal shop that i used to run, they were very reliable, we used to weld 2 -3mm mild steel using .8 wire, and they ran all day, they have a Euroconnector for the torch so you can repair them easily, the machines are made by an Italian co CEA: and supplied through

I've got one of those, but with a toggle switch to change to the spot timer (never used it)
Works better with a nice new torch as the supplied one is cr*p.

Sounds like ive done ok then. They were going to put it in the skip. They did say they were having a few probs with it but so far none have shown up. Having taken the side off it looks pretty simple in there so if there is any probs it shouldn't be too hard to fix. Are parts expensive?
I think they really just wanted their boss to buy them a nice new flash welder, so were looking for faults.
Im using it with a nearly new parweld torch so hopefully that will sort most probs.
The one thing i may alter on it, is that the earth lead is permanently attached. I would like to change this to a dinze plug so i can use my long earth cable. Any issues with doing this?

Nope. Bit of fiddling about but no reason why not.

Wasnt this brought up last week. With someone saying a dealer was trying to tell him that Sealey were all made in Italy ? Are thay or are they not, or to complicate matters, are some (or were some in the past) made in Italy and others made elsewhere.

Started to notice a bit of a problem now. On some amp settings i am struggling to get the correct sizzling sound, it just sound like a humm or a small buzz?? Any idea what the problem could be?
It does seem to weld ok, but it just doesn't sound right. Even with the wire feed right up it wont start to crackle.

A transformer-like hum is the natural sound for a nice welder - they'll try like mad to sound like a transformer hum rather than make untidy bacon frying noises no matter what you do to the settings.

Normally you've got to pay more than £500 for one. You are a bit lucky to pick up such a thing for free.

Though with wirespeed right up they should get a bit crackly. Possibly a capacitor gone or something. Other thing that makes a really nice smooth noise is not enough wire speed.

Afaik, most if not all Sealey welders are rebadged Telwin machines, made in Italy.

Obviously you got a good bloke to set it up for you Paul. Mind you, you should ask him if he can get it to run a bit cooler so you can stop making arty bananas.
