Beer keg idea

Short story. Old man found 2 full size kegs in his garage of his new house, scrappy wouldn't take them so I did

Initially was gunna make a log burner but got thinking and maybe make something different?

Anybody got any ideas? Anything considered.

One also was going to hinge and have a top to it and fill with my car cleaning supplies

Surely they are aluminum? And therefore unsuitable for a burner anyway.

not much chance of that :they dont accept metal thats been melted down

I believe it illegal to cut these up that's why the scrappers won't touch them, there is a tel number you can call and they will come and collect them

my brother made countless phone calls over 3 years trying to get two kegs collected from the pub that were there when he took it over - the brewery just weren't interested unless he was going to buy full kegs from them - which seemed odd as they can't be cheap to manufacture / replace. They are now sat in my scrap pile waiting to be turned into something useful - they had more than their fair chance to get them back...

Some of them are stainless, there are 4 in the alleyway behind the office I work in, they 'belong' to Kuehne and nagel who can't be arsed to pick them up...

I did look into making a home brew setup a couple of years ago with 3 of them, one for boiling clean water, one for a mash tun and the third for boiling the liquor. I did find out that if you hassle the 'owners' enough they'll either pick em up or you might be able to get a letter from them saying they don't want them, then you can use them for whatever you want.

Same as gas bottles, but there's shedloads of those serving alternative uses these days.

I personally know of an instance where a chap bought a few stainless kegs, legit from a brewery, they had been classed as fire damaged, Long story short, He made a couple of nice items and took them to a boot-sale sort of place to sell them, The bobbies arrived carted him and the items away,Despite all protests he was told they were illegal to own, locked him up over night,The person that sold them to him at the brewery was not authorised to do so, when released the next day he still didn't get the kegs back!!

They won't accept metal that's been melted down - but they will accept castings - cardboard tubes (toilet rolls?) held vertically in a bucket of sand are perfect for making "offcuts of aluminium bar"

Especially if they've been left to weather a couple of months over winter - or dipped/sprayed with a weak caustic solution to age them.

but would u go to all that effort . and time and use a load of propane coke or oil to melt them down by the time u have done all that i could have gone out and earned a hundred quid

very true. but if you can't get rid any other way, or oil is free, or you're casting stuff any way

Some of the guys on the madmodder forums might be glad of the aluminium ones to make a forge or to melt down for Ali castings.

I am pretty sure that cider has to be delivered in Stainless barrels as it 'fizzies' in aluminium!

lol i pinched an empty one to make home made beer in or as i thought it was best part of it it was full so got p****d for a week then made the beer then got p****d again
