Beginner who has a nice large barn!

Hi there

This is my first post on the forum, having found a link from www.mk1oc.com which is the car club I run for MK1 Astra GTEs.

As the title mentions, I have a large barn in which I have 2 cars at the moment. One is close to completion and the other is a complete rust-bucket which I am hoping to learn on.

I hope to respray the car once I have finished all the welding jobs and was wondering what people suggest considering I have a decent sized barn to work in? The barn had its fair share of cobwebs and dirt associated with an old farm barn, so what can I do to stop that getting on the paint work etc?

Also I think I would like to use 2K, but want to make sure my setup is 100% safe.

All advice is really appreciated!

Hi and welcome...
You could make a 'booth' out of poly sheet, and damp down the floor. I do this in my place. It can become a 'box' full of overspray though... unless you vent it somewhere. Or make a roof-only one, or one with incomplete sides, etc etc. Just depends what level of flying mank and wind blasts through gaps etc that you have to deal with

Regards 2k there's tons of info out there and on here, best thing is to have a search and read up, then fire q's after that. But, air fed mask is best but needs clean air supply. There's info on here on that too.

That sounds doable! I have been reading up, takes time to get through all these posts. Was really just after information that would suit my particular setup.

Sure I could make some sort of temporary airfeed. There is a lot of crap that would fly around. So I'm thinking I might paint the floors and then use your sheet idea, maybe with a gap at the top and make it nice and high.

I just want to get started now!

I use a 24" box fan with a HVAC dilter taped to it to help control dust. It will also trap the atomized paint. I use one of those Allergan filters.

Could be installed in the plastic wall to provide a positive pressure.

I'm thinking I could make a permanent frame for the plastic sheeting and then roll it up out the way when not in use.

Or you could make something like a tent frame, so it comes apart and stows away, I made one like that for a blasting tent. Or poss something like a big gazebo frame if cheap enough, a guy on a bike forum I use does that but they're dirt cheap where he is.

Cheap gazebos appear at Aldi's now and again but you will probably have to wait 'til next year now as we get towards winter.

being in the welding trade i made a tubular frame from 1/2" pipe 5m x 3.5 and covered it in plastic sheet and attached a welding fume extractor to one end with a binks bellows filter in line,i just sweep and wet the floor before spraying,the only real expense was the extractor.
