Bench grinder dust extraction

Anyone any advice on extracting metal dust from bench grinding .. I don't know which way to go.. An industrial fan with piping etc or a industrial vaccine cleaner plumbed to collect the black cloud directly behind the grinder.. Any of you guys a successful system in place...

surely you mean vacuum cleaner

Vacuum cleaners tend to be very noisy, but they're easier to set up.

How much grinding are you doing?
As solving the problem of dust is best solved by collecting as its made at source, but this is costly.
Have you looked at powered repirators/respirators?

cyclone extractors add resistance to air flow. I use a tiny one based off bill pentze web page. Its ok though its designed for wood dust.

It's more the mess with me... Angle grinding steel etc creates such a mess in a small workshop ... It's going to be difficult collecting from such a mobile device I guess..

If you have a little time, do the search on the traffic cone dust extractor. They work very well

alot of modern vacuum cleaners have the air go over the motor, so you would need to seperate the filings out first and ensure that they dont hot the motor

Try searching for bill pentz. An American who has plans and calculations for making cyclone spectators. I based mine on his smallest. His designs are for word dust but work OK for grinding.

I've put the fan and motor unit as low as possible because I want this to be portable to double up as a garden blower/vac!

No thanks. He's made some glaring errors already and there are much better, more informed designs out there. For example, his extractor spins the air one way but the inlet to the cyclone spins the other. That's a very entry level flaw...
