Bench Grinder Pedestal

Hi All,

I recently acquired (bought) an 8" SIP Heavy Duty Bench Grinder and want to make a pedestal for it.

I've got an idea in mind (plagiarised from the bay of evil!) but want to make sure I have everything on it before cutting the first sheet of steel.

I'll be incorporating a quench bath on one side, is there anything else I should consider?

Rests, that bench grinder is a decent bit of kit but the rests are pathetic.

Mount it on a vertical length of box or tube, rather than I beam or similar. The vibrations on startup or slowdown can be horrendous in the vertical axis and have the whole thing shaking like a very shaky thing..

Do you mean the tool rests? Yeah they do look a bit flimsy.

Any suggestions though?

I'm going for a sort of tapered square box, about 900 tall, 200 square at the top, 300 square at the botton, made from 2mm thick steel. It'll have a 200 x 200 x 6mm plate at the top to mount the grinder on, and a 300 x 400 x 6mm plate at the bottom to allow me to bolt it to the floor.

Sounds good. I remember the huge cast iron pedestals we had on grinders in the old machine shop I worked in the 70's. Things were built to last in them there days.

Most pedestal mounted grinders I have used, the quench tank is mounted on the front for ease of access from both wheels.

You can’t beat a bit of mass,if you make a pedestal,consider filling with sand to absorb vibration,however small,it will help,here’s 2 of mine ,the larger one was all CI,with a suds pump,I cut it in half,then placed the motor underneath in a fabricated frame,so doubt it’s as good as it was pre mod,but as it’s a 3 hp motor it’s smooth enough,the smalle one has that box that weighs at least 10 kg so I think acts as a crude damper.

Guards and if not near a wall, a mount for a light. Hook for a dresser or holder for diamond dresser.

Thanks for the tips. I'm ok with the guards but hadn't thought of a mount for a light

If you have the quench tray underneath the grinding wheels so it catches the sparks it also reduces dust considerably. Just knock the rusty crud out of it from time to time.

Whilst I seem to be in the mood for typing, I thought it was about time I updated this thread too (I've just updated my thread on Lathe Chu ck Jaws).

I finally got round to making the pedestal for my bench grinder.



It still needs painting but it has a quench tray on the front and I've built in a shelf to store the polishing mops.

It'll sit here once finished:



Should have it all installed by the end of the week (waiting for paint!)
