Bench top £80 media blaster cabinet any good for DIY?

As the title says really, just for small parts and horse shoes, lots of videos on You Toob for upgrades and mods - but is anyone actually using one and will it do the job? seems to cheap to pass up if it does the job?

if your on about the small Clarke ones there not much use at all I have one and the only thing it gets used for is fine beadblasting of small parts. they have a small suction gun in them and couldn't knock the skin of a rice pudding and prone to pulsing there is no extraction on them just a small fibre filter that's neither use nor ornament I fitted a 4inch duct to mine with a suction fan on the end

I have the 80ltr one and use it for bead blasting aluminium parts for surface finish.

It's pretty poor but does what i want, one thing you will need if you get one is a cyclone from eBay, an old hoover and some bits of pipe. The setup as supplied is crap and borderline dangerous - the glass media dust builds up inside and gets blown out of any cracks in the door or cabinet, not good to breathe.

The cyclone and hoover transforms the setup into a workable item, door window stays clear, no leaks, the media does tend to build up everywhere inside apart from round the suction inlet though

Ok so it will need some mods doing to it but may be worth a punt, so what is the best media to use for rust removal on horser shoes etc.

Stick em in a vice and use a wire wheel on an angle drill. Far quicker cleaner and cheaper.

Yep, sounds about right - for rough cleaning use rough tools, wire brush would do it. In a cabinet you would need coarse grit and that means faster gun wear etc and better equipment. The little cabinets are ok for glass beads and light work.

a suction gun is really only suitable for small parts and rust that is not 2 heavy or glass beads for aluminium or steel that needs light corrosion removing without damage to machined parts or anything else
