Best angle grinder disc for grinding steel from slightly bumpy to flat

So, I have my rail track almost flat on its top but I have about 0.5mm high spots and want to grind them down. What are the best type of grinding disc for this? The longer lasting the better. Thanks.

Fibre discs, with a backing pad.

Either zirconium or ceramic would last much Bellerby than basic aluminium oxide.

if you want a nice flat finish using a grinder, my pick would be a 9" grinder with grinding disc and use as much of the flat available to see the high spots you grinding down, your looking for maximum contact moving back and forth.

but its an option to get it right, how long is your track? draw filing that would not take long with "a good going file" as a guy I used to work with used to say.

But what are you talking about, flatten the the radius of just 0.5mm high spots, do-able but its your project, good luck

0.5mm. If you are going to that length. You might as well put it on a surface grinder.

electric drill
shaper
belt sander

do you have grinding wheels
a movable vice

easy enough to adapt stuff so you can square the piece your grinding

Abuse of a drill press that is. There are much better ways to do it.

You havent said what length and how much there is to remove.

He might also have a belt sander but just not thought of using it - don’t see a problem in recommending other alternatives
