Best birthday present ever - but need help

Well after only 18 years my Colchester Triumph ran for the first time! Really smooth and quiet as well. AND on my birthday!

Have a bit of a problem though - the safety lock lever isn't engaging properly.

I have to hold it up to keep the lathe running - as soon as I release it the lathe stops.

There is a position stop on the back of the lathe. When I adjust that so the handle latches the lathe doesn't start at all.

Any ideas?

Perhaps Ronan or someone with an old Colchester could help?

Start by looking at headstock & levers there are 2 arms at back of machine by switch.
5645 is a lever locking pin
Looks the same design as Master , neighbour keeps his up with a bunje cord, drives me mad

my Colchester student, square top, the lever never gets used at all......
rplaced all the original crap switch gear (which was low down in line with the spining chuck !!!!!!!!!) ..to a stop / start button box mounted on the top of the lathe......
also made a clutch lever mechanism......chuck brake never worked prop....the clutch lever and ratchet from a 1960 ride on mower .......waste not, want not.......hahaha
bit messy but 1/2 way thru the job

My Chuck brake works fine.
I want to try to keep it original. It is shouting out for a full restoration - maybe one day.
I bought it off an old toolmaker who had it for years but then had to downsize. He said it had hardly been used and I agree. There seems to be no wear at all and it is really quiet running.
If I was going to bypass all the electrics I would go to a VFD direct to the motor. I would like a higher speed than 1000rpm and the bearings can take it as they did the same lathe with a 2 speed motor and 1600rpm I think.

Happy birthday Fizzy, many more of them. So what you are saying is when the stop/start lever on the saddle is engaged, it flicks back to off ? I don't know if my old master is the same as yours. Its an area of the machine i have never had to work on. I know on mine its a fairly long-winded series of levers to the back of the headstock that engaged with the clutches.

My own machine is having a bearing replaced, and so is stripped down. I can take a few piccys tomorrow and put them up. There is a part of shaft that rises vertically and has a projection that engages with another device. I am nearly sure that its the detent that hold the machine forwards or in reverse.

I have a manual here and will see if i can find anything about the problem.

If the spring 73656 was tired, then it might fail to hold the handle where you want it ?

A photo of the linkage, dunno if its the same as yours, the only thing that strikes me as adjustable is the knockout rod 71890-1 on the right. Cannot see anything else you could try.

Yes the red lever that goes to the drum.

The link I gave you for the student is the same as yours I believe the pin 4645 seems to be some sort of indent device had another look 5932 is a sprung on the rear of the main lever shaft I suspect it is broken or the switch spring5941.Never had a problem so dont know if it is adjustable it is behind lever 5475
Working the lever the shaft appears to slide through the housing when switching on.
some one was talking about the break mine is a drum, you press down on lever to action, mates is totally different,
