Best mask around £100

final getting fed up with one side of my old mask being attached to the head band with 2 cable ties after the knob falling off a long time ago!

So any suggestions around £100 ish ??

Liking the look of the esab warrior tech , but have used speedglass in the past too and liked that a lot

Second hand speedglas 9002,I don think anything else at £100 will touch it, especially if you buy the new upgraded headgear for it

I use the less expensive Speedglas 100.
Battery (button cell) operated so it hasn't died due to being stored in a windowless workshop like my ESAB & Optrel did.
Saying that, it's 5 or 6 years old now and still on it's original battery.

Make sure whatever you buy has replaceable batteries. Speedglas from eBay is probably a good bet. Miller elite 2nd hand is also good and is what I use.

Flip front fixed shade might be an option, or do you definitely want an auto mask?

I've got a virtually brand new hardly used ESAB Origo that I'm looking to sell?? In excellent condition shades 9-13.

My first and only mask is the GR8+ from Cheltenham Welding Supplies.

I have nothing to compare it to but the reaction time appears to be better than many, and the 'viewing window' is very large.

I find it brilliant as a noob welding enthusiast, as it's comfortable, reacts instantly and has a wide range of adjustment.

I leave mine on the darkest setting with a long 'back to light' time, because I'm scared of damaging my eyes.

No offence intended, but that's like saying I only use 6th gear in my car because it saves petrol.


The settings are there to use, so use them. You will damage your eyes more by squinting through an E13 and not seeing
what your doing.

So what setting would you recommend for MMA, 2.5mm rods, and a range of 70-100 amps?

P.S. Would driving in 6th account for my lumpy getaways?

Turtle, I think I have only been up to shade 13 about 4 times , and that was on 20mm plate using spray transfer, tbh normal welding I don't often go above 10, usually it's left on 9 for everythkg

Thanks mate, I'll crank it down a few notches tomorrow when I have another try.

My experience wigh welding maxes is they are uncomfortable and after a short time the ability to flick down with a nodding action but have it stay up when you raise it all but disappears.

I got a semi decent lid from True fusion for < £50, its comfy enough to wear all day, decent levels of adjustment, has their IQ1700 sensor in it (does 5-13 shades and a grind mode) only issues I've had is when the outer lens has gotten dirty from mig splatter it struggles to stay dark when tigging...new outer lens solved that.
If I was working all day everyday I might have spent the extra for the larger lens, but tbh it does what I need it and if I drop something heavy on it and it breaks...I'm not going to be too annoyed (whereas I might be a lot more cheesed off if I broke a lid at £100+_
