I had to flog my fancypants mountain bike in the end to buy a better camera, a wide angle lense is essential for this kind of stuff.

Hi, yes im gonna try waxoil. I really want to try and keep the sheen on it if i can. I have spoken to a sculptor who has done a few in steel and he has done a few in the past with waxoil. Im gonna try it on a test piece, leave it for a few days and see what its like. Howz your calf project coming along? Looking forward to seeing more of it. You done the ball yet?

Waxoyl goes rusty after a few weeks/months. Lacquers seem to give up the ghost in the end. Clear coating mild steel is a massive problem.
Calf? has gone to the galvanizers. I must check with Mum before any more pics go online as it has got the guys name and dates on it. But loking good though.

Hi Chunko, I think it was you who suggested yacht varnish? Anyway got some this week so gonna try that as well on test piece. Have you ever had any work chromed? My guess would be very expensive

Yacht varnish on rust gives a nice looking and durable finish.
I found that a satin finish looks best. Try it on some offcuts first.
To speed up the rusting use amonium chloride which is easy to buy off Ebay.
Plating? I looked into that a few years back and was amazed by the lack of interest from the companies that do it.

Waxoyl problem is edges, it should sit on the flat fine, but exposed, it may well dry eventually. 1k clear won't last (normal rattle can clear). 2k clear much better, but see the paint section for the H&S issues using that. Problem with any lacquer would be getting it everywhere into all nooks. Without that, rust will start to lift it at the edges.
Same with damage, edges especially easy to chip a bit and then rust, creep and lifting starts.
Linseed oil is what I'm using on some flowers that live outdoors, though it prob needs re-doing now & then, 6-month, yearly? V.cheap, takes a while to dry. Possibly could be thinned and sprayed out of one of those hand-pump bottle things. Believe boiled linseed contains white sprit already.
I intend to try Gibbs Brand before long on some other things, when I can get past the £15 a can price. But it's rep is good and a bloke I know and trust says it's good. Again it prob needs re-doing periodically.
Don't think any of the above last forever. There are some industrial clear coatings about but so far haven't found anyone who's used them.
