bit of pipe welding

im not trying to be and never wish to be a pipe welder by trade, but i do love welding and pipe welding being the F1 equivilant i thought i would have a go!
we just finished some work at a pipe supply company who had a few off cuts of 150mm sch40 pipe which was bevelled and they said i could take the pieces.
i used 2.5mm filarc 56s for the root and beads then capped with 3.2mm comet j50 (all 7016's)

tacks and restarts were ground down
the root went better than i expected as there was no burning through of the key hole, penetration was generally a fraction shallower than perfect but its my first go.

i only took one pic of the bead but the second was as good as th first!!

cap with slag on, this was a 450mm rod and i wasnt ready for how quick i had to move around pipe, with only short sections of pipe there was no where to rest myself on to steady end of rod

finished item:

all in all i was quit pleased with how it went, filarc root was at 60amp all round, beads with filarc were 75amps and 90amps for the 3.2mm cap.

what wall thickness is 40 schdeule pipe ?

have found when welding pipes like that every now and then you run into a soft spot and get an odd burn through

then again I am always welding non bevelled pipes I suppose 3mm wall at ~80amps DC might be a bit hot

did you turn the pipe around such that you had the target area for welding in a favourable position or did you put your overhead skills to good use

schedule 40 is approx 6mm wall thickness

pipe was welded whilst fixed in the 5G position (pretty much as in the photos)

i wrote numbers on pipe which indicates the positions ie 3 oclock

3mm wall pipe is tricky stuff to weld, esp when pipes are profiled and butt onto another, good fit up is essential.

I have a pic somewhere of an exempler I did to show my laddies how it should be done. I'll source and post.

Prep, tacks, then grind tacks. Root (6011) grind back of root, then cap (6013)

Flange Jockey pipe thread is an excellent exempler too. A bench mark for you to aspire too!

put your root in with minimal weaving, then weave all your fill till your nigh on flush. let it cool a bit then cap
