It wasn't a success..
The biggest problem was the need for a frame for the IBC.
The one I used had had the top cut off and it was just too flimsy. I made a wooden frame to go into the hole but it still wasn't great.
I reckon it you take enough time and try to do it properly, it could work. I just ran out of time on a non essential project.

They tend to come in a framework cage.

Theyre plastic,thats the problem.I made a large cabinet using an old discarded heating oil fuel tank 4ft cylinder,it needed a frame building up inside for the legs,once i cut the door opening,it was very floppy,I made f'glass doors and flatbar/angle/50mm box frame inside it and its very solid now,i wanted a plastic and galvanized legs cabinet so I could store/use it outside without it getting rusty.Its big enuff to take a motorcycle frame.Its one of those things ,if you have it,you will use it more than you though you would.A rectangle IBC will be easier to frame up than what i had to do.

Why not just get some ply and make your own from scratch? You could make it to whatever specs you wanted then, and if you use something like 3/4" ply, that definitely ain't going to be flimsy. 
It's only around £20 for a 8'x4' sheet, so wouldn't be much difference between that and buying/transporting an IBC.

I was wondering the same thing. Much as it is tempting to make one from steel, storage is then an issue and after completion of the current motorcycle project, not sure how much use it would really get. Screw a few bits of 18mm ply together on a timber frame, put a hinged lid with a plexiglass window, a strong light and the obligatory long glove connectors in.. Anyone see a big problem with that method for a short term solution?

I can't see any problem with it even as a long term solution, ne'er mind short term. If airtightness is an issue, it's easy to either run a bead of silicone round the joints once it's assembled, else run a bead on the panel edges before assembly if one wants to be totally sure of a permanent seal. Then a coat or two of varnish or paint on the inside, just to stop dust embedding in the grain, and it would be good to go. Personally, I'd merrily go that route without a moments concern, if I ever felt the urge to do any blasting. It has sturdiness, ease of construction and expandability, whilst also requiring zero welding skills. Wood is a much underrated material these days, IMHO.
Yeah,if you welded tabs in various places to the outer cage and bolted to the plastic it would work.My original plan was to rivet up one from a short wheel base landrover roof/rear tub that Iv had laying around for years lol.

Hardly surprising when you see the quality that is on offer at the usual suspects. Then there's those fabricated 'joists' made from papier mache and the sweepings from a coffin-shop floor...
it'll be interesting to see how well they cope once a water pipe has burst and soaked them into mush.Our 2-storey office suite at work is built using them and the floor has more flex than a 6th-form girls' gymnastics team...

There is that point.
Got some batten timber from Wickes last year, (their timber generally tends to be of a slightly better quality than the B&Q stuff), to make a fence and gate for the side of the house. To say it was an experience would be polite. Had to use wedges at some of the joints before tightening them up, to counter for the warp in the wood. Seen those things here and there. The things which look like a cross between plywood and particle board? I definitely wouldn't trust those things for owt. They seem like just another excuse for cutting costs, weight and space consumed, whilst having no real benefit.
