Blast Cabinet Refurb

Thought I’d start a little project thread to try and keep progress up on this, it’s sat in the same place for 4 weeks now!

I’ve got this cheap pot and this old blast cabinet, Sealey or the like.

I need gloves and glass if anyone knows of a decent supplier.

I need to turn up the new grit valve to @brightspark ’s design.

And do all the pipework, get a new regulator and a new safety valve (not sure how that’s meant to work because I’m sure it will just block with grit).

Also need new blast pipe and nozzles really.

no need for a safety valve as your comp has one on . the blast hose and jet can be had from ace engineering on ebay

Ive got exactly that pot, waiting on me sorting it out...

If you get to turning a valve up, id be eager to persuade you to make a couple, and flog the inferior one to me! : )

My lathe is miles and miles away - but ive just thought - maybe i could cnc mill one out of a solid lump?

do you reckon it would be easy enough for me to just cnc out of a lump?

Ive got a piece of heavy wall tube I was gonna make one out of. Weld the cap on.
I’ve got some slightly thinner tube, but it might be too thin to drill and tap or put a bolt right through.

Mill that can do curves without you having to wobble all the wheels at the same time! : )

I’ve got to go pick up some of my steel from where these bits of pipe came from Julian I’ll see if I can get another thick wall piece

Thanks, that looks easy enough to make. I'll have to find some suitable materials first, or just make it with more layers.

Then I'll need to source flat grit

I made mine out of 1/4" wall 4-5" od tube, I have loads spare, it was the original ram tube from the Bradbury four post car lift I converted to 12 foot lift, I just welded mine together, no bolts as I did not see much of a reason to strip it down, if it blocked I can unscrew it from the pot and clean it out, worst way my 9" grinder will come out to play, but that is just me, used what I had around,

Somthing I'm unsure of with these valves -

You need to seal where the linkage between the external lever and the internal valve shutter goes through the body of the valve.

How do you do this?

Cut a step in the shaft and install an o ring.
Thats what I did.

Thank you. What sort of diameter is the whole job?

Working out of I can mill one out of a bread tin alloy ingot... I suspect not.

I could sand cast one but making up the pattern for one is almost more effort than just milling it from a billet. But I think my loaf ingots are too small.

4 inch is ideal but 3inch if u have nothing else. I just had 2 cast today in ally will post them up later or tomorrow showing the furnace and sand boxes

Will measure up. Don't know the diameter of a small loaf tin... They have a bit of a taper too.

I'll go check now.

A fair bit of taper, but I've still, just about, got 3.5 inches at the base.

I'd skim some off the bottom anyway, so it will get wider rather than narrower.

Seems possible then, right?
