Blast cabinet refurb.

Fed up with the bad weather and not being able to get any blasting done outdoors I decided it was time I got a blast cabinet.
My initial thought was to buy an oil drum and convert it as I've seen on here and other places.
Actually bought an oil drum of a seller on Ebay. He asked what I wanted it for and told me he actually had a blast cabinet he wanted to get rid of.
A few days later some folding changed hands and a hairy journey home with a small trailer and a large out of balance lump and I had more work than I'd bargained for.

Good find, my mate tried and tried to get me to buy the one he had, I just didnt have room at the time, hey ho

Apparently the thing had sat out side for some years and rust had got a hold. Especially around the rubber doors seals. The glass viewing window had been replaced with perspex which had a crack in it. The cyclone grit recycling sytem on the back was solid with damp grit and hanging off due to being overfilled and overweight.
The blast gun was missing the nozzle and the blow down gun was missing.
First job was to remove the cyclone to make things easier to move about.
I also stripped down the motor to dry it out.

Next a few hours work with the grinder and some wire cup brushes had it looking a bit less rusty.

Next it was out with the spray gun and a few coats of high build primer all over. I opted to leave the inside primer grey for better lighting. It'll soon get removed in there anyway I suspect but better to do it whilst the gun was already full.
The cyclone was battered and twisted from years of abuse. As I said way overfilled and it looked like someone had used a hammer to encourage the flow of damp grit down the hopper.

Finally the top coat and finishing touches.
New gloves and nozzles from Guyson. Cleaned up the ally trims to gloves holes and air vents. New hoses to gun. New piece of glass and some protective film. A few new nuts and bolts. New bulb holders and wiring to light unit. New rubber seal to lighting glass, old one had hardened with heat from bulbs.
Paint took ages to go off in the cold weather. My little fan heater couldn't really get the garage warm enough.

Didn't bother with the mesh grid as that takes most of the hit. Thought it was worthwhile putting a lighter colour inside to aid visibility even if only short term.
May consider getting a rubber lining inside depending how the paint holds up.

i see someone has stolen you wheels and left it on bricks

It's the standard Guyson 400 series suction gun at the moment.

I must admit that my first thoughts of building a oil drum based cabinet where to use my 10 gallon Ebay pressure pot. My small pressure pot doesn't get any use now I've built the larger one.

Only down side I saw to using the pressure pot was the constant need to open the cabinet and recycle the grit. The cyclone system in this one should take care of that. I just hope the feed to the gun is upto scratch.

do u mean airfeed from comp cfm??i my 14cfm cant keep up with the gun it will run it at 45 psi but my 28cfm pump can hold at 90 psi no bother

Great job that. I wish I had the space to have a blast cabinet. It would be really useful if I had a cabinet big enough to get body panels (wings. doors etc) in to remove any surface rust.

Good effort! My Guyson uses the same triangular gloves, but I didn't fancy paying the £80 that Guyson wanted for them a few years ago so I made some fibreglass fillets that convert the triangular openings to circular and use some long rubber gauntlets instead.

I actually got sent some long rubber Gauntlets by Guyson as their cheap alternative. Industrial strength Marigold Emperor gauntlets. A good fit in the triangular opening but a sod to drill the holes for the fixing screws.
Should be able to get my next set for less than £10 shopping around.
