Blast media for car panels

Hi Guys,

Which blast media would you recommend for car panels and suspension parts etc? I imagine I'll mainly only use the blast pot on the hard to get to parts of the car panels. I have a 10gallon pot, 2 x 14.5 CFM compressors and a 3mm nozzle.

either j blast superfine or kiln dried sand even though its not good for health . I'm still here healthy after using it 40- years . just use decent filters extraction and an airfed helmet if ouside

i use garnet on my car components, it is quite rough but leaves a good surface for painting after

i wouldnt use it on a panel though as it may well distort it.

I wouldn't blast panels neither

I bought my last lot of J-Blast Superfine from Hodge Clemco a couple of years ago but the website seems to be unavailable at the moment. Although they advertise it as expendable media I use mine to it's dusty death in a cabinet. With a 3mm nozzle and one 14cfm compressor at 90psi I can distort sheet steel in the cabinet using the J-Blast if I'm not careful and more so with glass bead.

Seeing as those pots can only take super fine media your choice is almost made for you

I'm buying a pallet of crushed glass £160 delivered. I'll sell what I don't use.

Brightspark, I appreciate everyone makes their own choices but HSE website says you need an APF1000 rated mask to safely blast using sand. Even the isocyanate air fed respirators are only APF40 ! That was enough to put me off using sand.

You can always wet blast, that removes something like 90% of the free silica so it's safer. I tried wet blasting using a £30 eBay attachment on my Karcher K2. It was about a third of the speed of dry blasting and used three times as much sand, but you might have more luck using a more powerful pressure washer.

I don't use a mask I use a proper blasting helmet fed off a 90cfm comp and my cabinet uses a 4inch woodchip extracta so no chance of getting a whiff of dodgy dusty air I've been blasting for over 40 years and just been for chest ex ray and I'm as fit as a fiddle so I'm hardly worried

I read it works well but is quite slow. At this stage I plan to blast fiddly areas and for surface prep before primer.
