blasting medium

Hi Guys

I am looking for info on what type of blasting grit/medium to use.
I would idealy like to collect it localy as I will be useing 25kg sacks

I have a large blasting cabinet with a large air/dust extractor that extracts all the light/dust and the heaver particals fall into a container for re-use.

I blast suspention parts mainly, small brackets, mainly steel

For steel I'd recommend chilled iron. This doesn't create dust and can be used a few hundred times. It's expensive to buy but you should have very little waste using a cabinet.

For aluminium, aluminium oxide is probably the way to go.

If yes,what is maximum size parts you can fit in your cab ?

I am only a small time privet classic car buff,
I would think there are far better setups out there that will offer a better blasting service than me.
will have to pass on the privet work sorry.

as to blasting medium, any idea were a local suppliers to St Albans might be???

Piero I don't blast anymore as I have a friend that does it, He is in Uxbridge but would probably sell you some media.

One point to make about chilled iron, it must be kept perfectly dry, it's rusts faster than an Austin Metro.

Never really noticed the rust issue myself as i kept it dry, any media should be kept dry.

it does go rusty and can build up inside a blast pot and eventualy block up. the result is a strip down open the inspection hatch and belt all round the pot with a hammer to loosen it and take out the clumps its fine if there used all the time and emptied afterwards but if left standing

You could phone Hodge Clemco Ltd, I did earlier in the week for 50kg of JBLAST SUPAFINE. The carriage was only 3.80 less than the media before Vat though! I am trying this media at the moment in my cabinet to see how long it lasts as it is listed as expendable media, results so far are excellent on alloy and very good on steel.

You could phone Hodge Clemco Ltd, I did earlier in the week for 50kg of JBLAST SUPAFINE. The carriage was only 3.80 less than the media before Vat though! I am trying this media at the moment in my cabinet to see how long it lasts as it is listed as expendable media, results so far are excellent on alloy and very good on steel.

it will be ok on a suction gun for about 3 or 4 uses before powdering down. in a pressurised blast pot about twice

The powder coaters I use for blasting larger items swears by Garnet. Says it works even when dust. Rarely ever cleans his blast room out as he says the spent dust is extracted by the fans

I find the same with glass grit. That's fine in a blast room where the dust has plenty of space to disperse in, but in a cabinet like what the OP has the dust will obscure the work.

You could probably buy it in Twickenham..
I never bought Jblast but my chilled iron and aluminium oxide came from
west london shot blasting centre.
