body tolerance sheets/books used for welding chassis legs into Motor Cars

Hi, I am a panel beater by trade and have been for quite a number of years and repair Classic Cars. I use a Caroliner Body Repair Jig system. I am soon to undertake the restoration of both an Mk1 and Mk2 Ford Lotus Cortina using my Arcos Lincoln Minimig 180 mig welder, to repair and replace new body panels including, chassis legs, inner wings and outer wings as well as many other body panels

Before I can start I need to try and obtain some body tolerance data in the form of either a Manual or Electronic CD. Does anyone on the forum know of where I could buy any of these data sheets or CD?

Also, I will be using the mig welder as well as a spot welder and would be very grateful of any information on up to date information of methods as well as welding equipment from anyone on the forum that repairs motor cars using mig and spot welding equipment and so would be grateful of any help in these areas soon. Here’s hoping that someone may have some information regarding my requests.

I've no idea where you could get hold of factory recommended tolerances apart from the factory workshop manuals. Maybe someone from a Cortina forum might be able to look them up.

In the 1990s when I was last involved in body tolerances the targets tended to be +-1.5mm for suspension mounting points, and anything around panel gaps tended to be less than 1mm (or until they look nice). Other parts tended to have +- 2.5mm tolerances.

You'll likely need tighter tolerances locally where two holes mount one part (those tend to be +- 0.5mm).

Of course yours could be different - '60s cars won't have managed those tolerances.

I am in Ecclesfield and have been involved with car body repairs and restoration for many people in Sheffield and surrounding areas. I have had a small exposure to TIG welding as my friend in Wombwell is a sheet metal worker who used to work at Moorwood Vulcan’s in Ecclesfield and now works for a Rotherham sheet metal company. I would be interested in any books or learning material that covers basic TIG welding and then hopefully get a good Tig set.
