Bolting Fence Posts to Wall

I know there are many posts about masonary fixings. I am seeking a little handhold before I ruin my 6-month-old brickwork.

I want to relocate and fix two 90x90 fence posts to brick walls. They were originally attached using these countersunk Concrete Screws.

I want to use these Concrete Bolts as the countersunk screws have small heads and had just mashed their way halfway through the previous posts and still allowed considerable movement. So my thoughts ran to longer fixings and bigger heads to get a firmer hold.

I want one of the posts to be attached to the corner of a wall. The holes will be only 45mm from the outer edge of the brickwork.

Assuming I carefully drill the holes straight and true what is the risk of splitting the brick when tightening the bolts (carefully!)?

I’d use shorter bolts but you should be ok. You could try using an 8.5mm drill as opposed an 8.0mm but I’d maybe do a test first to make sure they bite. And clean out the holes properly.

I’ve only recently started using these fixings and they’re really good!

Edit: You’ve got to get through the 90mm posts so that’s the right length bolt, sorry missed that bit!

Spreader plates under the bolt heads will help prevent the wood being crushed.

Don't worry, the bolts will have generously sized galvanized washers!

I have considered chemical anchors, but I want to try these concrete bolts as they seem easier for a limited number of fixings that have quite a low load on them.

@cheb beat me to it.
I would use thread bar and chemical anchors.
Countersink the post, so the threadbar is below the surface and use a flat washer to spread the load.
The chemical anchor will be fare easier on the brickwork and you will have a much stronger fixing.

If you want to go with the thunder bolts I can send you a few, but counter sink and use a washer to stop them pulling in.

I'm up for trying both methods for future reference. Thunder bolts for the post going into the middle of the run of wall and resin anchors for the more vulnerable corners.

I have never used either method before.

I have used both anchor you link to. The concrete bolts are best. I recently used them in old brick work within 25mm of the edge and was fine. I had same concern as yourself but thought sod it. Its held up well I the 60 year old brick work. Old council bricks so soft really.
And in the resin, I have used this method also with good outcome. I used threaded bar and with polyester resin as I have plenty around. Intact I tried to remove them and no chance so I cut them off at concrete level.

If you're on 45mm from the edge of the wall you will probably split it tightening the bolts up, that's if you don't split it drilling the hole!
I'd use a non hammer drill to drill the holes then chemical fixing a stainless steel stud in.

The resin will be fine but make sure you get the one that goes in a standard silicone gun to save you having to buy a gun.
I'd go for galvanised thread-bar but it's harder to get. However even the zinc plated will last you (or me) out.
Or you could be really posh and go for stainless which is also easy to get.

The only thing ive found with thunderbolts/concrete screws is they tend to rust on the threads once used, normally makes them impossible to get out without breaking

I've bought resin, studs, bolts and penny washers. This weekend accounted for I think.

My new favourite Screwstation purchase.

I experimented on the 'hidden' corner of the garage first and found I could easily use these screwbolts within 45mm of the edge. I returned the resin and anchors unused.

The superfluous holes you can see are from the builder's installation using 7.5 x 75 masonry screws to attach a 90x90 posts - in the wrong places.

The last image shows the 9 deg angle I had to cut on one post to make the post faces parallel. The house isn't parallel to the garage (or the edge of the drive on either side or the joint line of the paviours or the fence on the other side of the drive that you can't see)

Using a torque wrench to install wood/masonry fixings was a new experience.

I found a drop or two of washing up liquid made inserting these 10 x 150 screwbolts much easier.

These will be my first choice for fixings in future.
