bosch grinder dead man switch

The thread on angle grinders got me thinking about another grinder to save switching discs. So I'm thinking of a bosch.
Is the dead man switch thing on the professional bosch grinder any good or a nuisance?
Can you still use it 1 handed?
Or if your cutting on her side does your thumb have to hold it in then?
Or is their a preferred 115mm grinder?

The ones with a dead man's switch are usually the rear handle models. Most body grip grinders now have a push to latch switch which disengages by pressing the back of the switch.

I dont know of any dead mans switches for any angry grinders

none of them work when in use and certainly not when its gotten to a dangerous situation many have to be shut off even a foot switch would be useless when using one as you need a steady footing or grip on the grinder

ive seen and been in situations where the grinder has beaten even me it just happens so fast

best one and been honest here never use an angry grinder on your own and always have someone watching when using it so they can shut the power off very quickly

Maybe its not called a dead man's switch but its not a normal sliding switch. Whatever is used on the new bosch professional

All my 4" are on a sliding switch that locks on I dislike paddles as restricts how I can hold the tool. My 9" on a trigger which I'm fine with

I just got a bosch cordless with a paddle switch.
It's got a safety interlock, little red tab that you push out of the way before you pull the paddle in.
The same grinder is available with either paddle or slide switch.
I did look at the parts list before buying to make sure it would be possible to remove the little red safety lock but now I have used it there is no need. It is very well located and one handed use feels natural after the first couple of goes.

It's fine to use one-handed.
It's a lot easier to use than the sliding switch on my last bosch grinder (cordless as well) and would certainly be a lot better with any sort of gloves on.

There does seem to be some sort of issue with my particular grinder with turning on, Maybe one time in 20 I pull the paddle and i feel a click like it is about to start but it locks out. Try again and it works fine.
I can not reproduce the problem on demand.
This grinder has some sort of drop protection so it might be due to me pulling the trigger while I am moving it?
I bought 4 of them at the same time so I'm waiting to see if the other 3 guys have any problems or I will look into it a bit deeper if I get 10mins.

Ps, the grinder I just got has a much slimmer body than my previous one. You can hold it at any angle and still reach the paddle.
I don't think a paddle switch on my last grinder would have worked half as well.

All the switches on angry grinders are a faff when wearing gloves. I recently bought a foot switch for the parts washer, I might get another to incorporates into an extension lead for the grinders.

I have got one of these, done the same thing and put it in the middle of an extension lead.
Use it with my bench grinder with the polishing mops on, ideal when loading up compound.
I also plug the Hoover into it when I get the air nibbler out.

Just wire it up with some nice flexible cable as they are so light (cheap!) stiff cable will not let it sit flat on the floor!

My Metabo has a NVR so once you stopped it with the foot switch you would need to operate the grinder switch to restart it. If you plug it in switched on it will not start.

I would like to mod them at some stage to have a foot pedal.

The one tool i have had accidents with (on 4 occasions) are angle grinders, my big hitachi 9" has a big trigger with a deadman button on the side you have to press in before you can pull the trigger.
I wouldnt have one of the old type paddle rocker switches on top of the handle for any price. One of my dads friends changed the wheel on one of those, plugged it in. Switch had been knocked to on. It started & leapt of the bench, the new 9" cutting wheel went halfway through his femur, he nearly died from loss of blood.
Not sure i would want a foot switch either!

I think what you are calling a dead mans switch is a paddle switch.

All my grinders are Makita they have full length Paddle switches The little tab in the middle is a saftey. There also a little tab to lock it on that I NEVER use.

I was about to say the only downside with my new paddle switch grinder is that I can't turn it on and put it upside down on the work bench to use both hands to grind something on it.
But that's probably a very bad thing to do anyway.

My 25 year old Black and Decker has a dead man switch IE it's not latching, if you drop it it will turn off. All grinders with triggers/paddles are like that too so it's not new or unusual.

Personally I prefer them that way, they seem more common in the USA but it also seems more common to running without the guard judging by the Youtubers I watch

I've seen someone one plug in a grinder that had a knot wheel on it and someone had been messing with it and latched the switch, not funny. Yes he should have checked it, yes he should have had it in his hand.

I think No Volt release would be a good option

The one argument about paddles is the fact you can't use them one handed but my old Black and Decker is easier to use one handed because you can operate it with a couple of fingers without thinking whereas the battery and mains Dewalt units feel like you are reaching for the switch.

I'm not left handed but a paddle is better for a left too because it's central, most lastching switches are set up for right handed people

One handed in any position is fine with mine but the body is slim enough to get a hand all the way around it
I am left handed but used the slide switch on the last one ok.

When i kill either of my draper grinders i will get a corded one with a paddle switch as i have on my milwaukee cordless, i find the push to lock on switched much harder these days

I always change discs by gripping the disc in one hand, holding the grinder in the other, pushing the lock button in with one finger, then twist the disc to loosen or tighten the nut. I never use the supplied spanner tool for tightening.

One day I did my usual, but absently pressed the start button instead of the lock button.....

Even as I did it I prepared for the tearing agony of ripped fingers.......but for pretty much the first time ever I had unplugged the flex before starting.

Normally I rarely ever did, but I do now, every time.
