bought a compressor needs some attention to it

just bought this from the looks of it its 3 phase 5.5kw i dont mind changing it down to use single phase as it looks like 3 phase but could be wrong as long as it fits in a space of 4ft x 4ft its the right size

what ive read on here the belt drives are better compressors

170 litre, 9.9 kgf/cm2 whatever that means as long as it can run air tools or a plasma cutter its fine

could do with a paint however if cost is too much could always cut it up and use it for something else

it says 5.5 kw does it state that on the motor ? if so you wont run if from a standard 13 amp socket as it will need a motor bigger then 3hp

i wont know whats on the motor until i collect the compressor

620 llpm equates to nearly 22cfm

That looks a proper chunk, with the size of the motor and the twin belts I would say you may struggle to find a single phase motor to run that without spending more money than buying a new compressor.

As the pump is rated at 1070 rpm, the belt gearing looks like the motor is approx 1400, you could quite easily slow it down to reduce the power required, so if it was to go to 600 rpm then the required power would be 3 (ish) kw it would be slower building up BUT the advantage would be it will be considerably quieter. And last for ever.
two stage pumps are slightly easier on the required motor torque also.
You might have to fit an unloader solenoid on a timer to the feed pipe to help it get to speed if on single phase for first 30 seconds or so and then that would close allowing the pump to then get loaded as normal.

5.5kw equates to about 7hp The motor will need to be a good one if the pump needs that much power.

im hoping that its possible just with a motor change but if need be will just use the expansion tank and get another small air compressor will post more info once the item has been collected from the person

slow it down and it will be smaller !! the only issue will be overcoming the dead flywheel effect ie getting the shear mass up to speed, once there it takes just the same amount of power.
cfm is cfm and the ratio of kw to cfm is pretty linear you cannot get a magic wand to change that, it takes similar power to produce the same amount of air with most piston compressors.
about 12-14 cfm for 3hp or 2kw you could fit a 20 kw motor to your pump and run it at the same speed it would still only produce 24/28ish cfm but the motor will actually only use 5.5 kw !! exactly the same as the original motor.

• A good single-stage compressor, per true HP input, will deliver about 4 true CFM at 100 psig. It is not uncommon to see this more like 3 CFM per HP.
• A two-stage compressor is more efficient, typically by 15 percent, versus a single-stage compressor. You might see 4 to 5 CFM per HP at 100 psi, instead of 3 or 4 CFM.

im aware that the compressor comes from a tyre repair shop and from the vid if that is the sound of it its quiet

size of unit is 1430 H x 500 W x 1000 L the clip quotes 2.2kw (3hp)

the motor thats on it now is a 7.5kw the air compressor is an industrial type wouldnt fit in the vehicle

1 meter high x 150 length x 500 wide

got the compression motor off it whilst there and that does compress air into the tank tried by hand over nozel and turning the wheel to crank it up i have to go for the rest another day

on another note im wondering if a 5.5 briggs and straton petrol engine will run thisas i hardly use the cultivator engine and could put it to better use instead

extra pics to the compressor the compressor tank is sound as ive tapped it all around checking for failures of the metal on the tank

its a 15" compression pulley with a 10" motor pulley

i can see some reflection of water/oil in bottom of the tank through the 1" filler gap pipe

im thinking of 2 ways here getting another compressor and using this as a filler tank only or try to get it going by replacing motor to a single phase 3hp motor as advised this would bring the rate of 22cfm down to 12/14cfm as advised by normspanners

for the moment id like to use the tank as it stands as a filler tank of air until i get the motor for it

until then im looking for advice on its fittings and what i can do with it
as im wanting to stand it up the big nuts appear to be welded onto the tank and id like to get a drainer onto the bottom/one end of the tanke to drain it of water and oil

which end is best to fill the tank up from the bottom or from the top ?

these 2 pics are the fittings that was on the tank until ive taken them off
the water release valve at the bottom looks bent to me

I don't suppose it makes much difference, I would just go with whatever works best in the way of connections.

mount the tank however as log as you can drain all the water out.

petrol engines on compressors are a twerp. i had a type 30 ingersol rand needed a 13hp petrol engine to replace a 4kw 3 phase motor. power wasent the problem more the powercurve of the engine. they seem to struggel getting from cranking speed to above 1500 ish rpm once theyv'e done that they are away

You can go bigger than 3hp on single phase. I have a 4hp motor here and I think you may be able to go slightly bigger but not sure. Forget 13a plugs though.

Be warned though, I planned to use this 4 hp one, geared down to replace a 7hp 3phase motor on a compressor. No chance overcoming the inertia though, even completely unloaded. Although your pump is considerably lighter than the chunk I was trying to spin over so it might well work.

Doesn't say where you are but I could be persuaded to get rid of that motor if you near the sw.

as goes for being light on the motor no its not lol its the old cast iron chunk i can only just mange to lift it on own and get it into place on the tank to moved it easily its a 2 person job

i have to stick to 13 amp plug for now could have got a smaller 3 phase motor 3kh today but i cant use it even had the twin belts on it

the new 5 hp ons are a bit rubbish tho ( well the ones i've met )

for now the tank looks like this would have wanted it stood up but this wiill have to do



that liquid came out of the compressor as i cleaned the water drain off underneath it its plyboard so will do it some good being oil mixture

i will be plumbing in the water bleeders in cooper piping i have 3 output tubes 1 needs capping underneath the compressor thats over 2" cap needed for that, the other 2 one is an 1" the other is a 3/4 output as im considering connected both tanks together using one as a reserve tank

for 40 litres it takes the compressor 3.15mins to get to the required pressure within its tank
