Box or angle with wood

Hi, Im starting out and making shelves, possibly a display stand.

Was looking at other work and seeing shelves with wood inlayed.

It looks obviously neater to have wood layed under angle, but what if under neath is seen as well.


Would angle iron ever have more flat bar welded to it to hide edges on both sides...

My god you are a sarcastic bunch.

Unless Graham travels from London to cork to Hamden USA a lot, it is possible he is using others examples to ask a question.

I guess what he is asking is: If you use angle to provide an edge on the top of the shelf, tray/whatever, what do you consider best for the underside as that could be viewed as well.

To me, providing the angle does not protrude past the wood on the underside then it should look OK. Along the angle, drill, counter sink holes for screws to fasten in the wood and leave no sharp edges.



But that is just me.

So what he is really after is some Chanel section metal that would fit over top and bottom of the shelf,

If doing it myself I would put the angle on the underside let it support the wood rather then in the pics above, but I guess it is down to a style!

You could route the edge of the wood so the surface sits flush with the face of the metal.

I always think these kind of looks are difficult to get right, it's all about that "used industrial" feel and I would always try and get things perfect when they aren't supposed to be. If you watch a few episodes of the The Salvager or Le Salvager he does quite a bit of this kind of thing. He would probably use some rusty old angle and some pallets and it would look amazing with a bit of wax on it.

I didn't know channel section existed, if thats the case, that sorts it.

The trays are fine, wood sits on angle. But for areas like the back, i thought box maybe a sturdy frame.

Also the cabinet is made of angle, which doesn't look right to me.

|Yes I've seen the salvager armalites, great show.
Used to live in hertfordshire as well by the way! played squash leagues there in Potters bar.
Some nice wood out in St Albans wood recycling.

Me personally, id make up a few samples in different styles and see which suits the item best.
Imo, i think its better to develop your own techniques rather than copy others.
Eg,
A flat bar with tabs welded on might suit?
Or just a flat bar with screws into edge
Or box section with tabs.
Hmmmm.
I just had an idea for a project im doing.
Two pieces of angle, with interlocking crenellations to make a channel.

Won't be ripping this one off, just using it as an example for information.

I use the angle going underneath for my garage shelves / stands, just drop the ply in and it doesn't go anywhere.
